I am trying to find ATF type 4 oil for the 48re transmission, anyone know where to get it except the dealer. AS it is says on the dip stick to use only ATF 4

Amsoil states that their ATF is suitable for applications requiring ATF+4. See their website. Amsoilman will chime in I'm sure.

The only DC approved ATF+4 oil is from your dealer. For whatever reason DC will not release the formulation of ATF+4 so other oil companies can make it. Therefore, if you have a warranty issue with your transmission and DC can prove you used something besides Mopar ATF+4 you can be denied a warranty repair.

I called the dealer near me and asked the price on the ATF+4. It was $9 / qt, which is about the same price as Amsoil, maybe even a bit cheaper when you figure in shipping on the Amsoil. Next time, I'll probably just get the stuff from the dealer. I only need 3+ qts for the xfer case.

I think the prices have been exaggerated many times on the internet to the point people are afraid of buying atf +4 from the dealer. I bought mine from my dealer, no discounts or haggling, for $14. 50/gal. To me that's not that expensive for something that needs changing every 30k. .

This is a an email I got from Royal Purple concerning their ATF fluid. I think it is really ridiculous to not let anyone else manufacture a comparable product. When my warranty runs out I will definately change!

While your truck is covered under warranty I recommend using the ATF=4 transmission fluid. At this time Royal Purple is not offering a replacement fluid for the ATF+4 that Dodge will allow the use of while under warranty. In fact I don’t know of any aftermarket fluid that Dodge will allow you to use under warranty in that transmission.

Now after your warranty has expired you can use Max ATF with no problem.

Thanks

I can tell the difference instantly between amsoil ATF & ATF+4 , amsoil is good but it is not ATF+4, It smells different and feels different< So if you are worrying about warranty stick with the ATF+4,I think you can run ams and some others all day long,If warranty issues develop and the rep does the sniff test you can bet anything other than ATF+4 will Fail. I have never heard of this happening but I"m sure it has.

I sell amsoil all the time, but when amsoil starts putting ATF+4 on the front of their bottles OR HANDS ME A DISCLAIMER OR A HOLD HARMLESS AGREEMENT Than I will sell it in replacement ,I AM NOT GOING TO MISLEAD MY CUSTOMER IN BELIEVING IT IS THE SAME ... ... . JUST FOR THE SALE... . Read closely NOWHERE DOES IT SAY IT IS EQUAL OR EQUIVALENT TO ATF+4 ( it say recommend applications) Who recommending it? Not DC. Also I said I could tell the difference I did not SAY it was inferior or bad. It was the warranty that is in question not the quality of the Products. If you want to put your reputation and business at risk is up to you . I like amsoil stuff so calm down...

Any manufacturer of oil products will put the recomendations on the containers, and I do beleive Amsoil Inc. has done just that. If the product does not meet or exceed these requirements, then Amsoil Inc. would be liable for false advertising! And yes, they do have a warranty.

I've been with Amsoil for 25 years, and have never seen them state something that can not be proven.

Recommended for applications requiring the following performance specifications:

GM DEXRON II®, DEXRON III

Ford MERCON®, MERCON V

Chrysler ATF+ through ATF+4®

Honda Z-1

Toyota Type T and T-IV

Mitsubishi/Hyundai Diamond SP II & III

Allison C-3,C-4

Caterpillar TO-2

Voith G-1363

ZF TE-ML 14C

GM Strasbourg & Opel

Vickers I 286S & M2950S

The Mopar ATF+4 5013457AA is $4. 80/qt and the 5013458AA is $17. 67/gallon. These are list prices. If you can find that your dealer uses Mopar bulk oil, it is even cheaper. You would have to supply your own container.

My mechanic, who services my work trucks, did the required flushes on my '03s. Before doing so he contacted the dealer to determine if the oil he was planning to use would work. If I am not mistaken, they sold him a single bottle of additive to use with the Havoline ATF that he regularly uses. I can verify the details by phone but I am pretty sure this is how it went.

I had a transmission fail in the '03 QC just before the 70k warranty expired. The transmission was replaced at no cost to me. The required service records were presented to the dealer. Clearly ATF+4 wasn't used yet the coverage remained, no problem.

Red Line C+ATF and MTL???

I just received a reply via. E-Mail from Red Line Oil regarding the compatability of their products with the Mopar ATF+4 (MS9602) pt#05013457AA, and the gear oil for the NV-5600(6-sp) (MS9224) pt#4874464.

Their reply was as follows. "The C+ATF will meet and exceed the MS9602 spec and is suitable for use where the ATF+4 fluid is called for. " "The MTL meets the MS9224 spec, it is well suited and will perform well in the NV-5600 transmission. "

Just thought I'd pass this information along as an other option.

Hope this helps.

This sounds like a group that is crying foul because they can't compete in the marketplace. This group should also know that many DC dealers are purchasing bulk oil and ATF from their members, and using it in all DC vehicles regardless of the TSB. I would like to see one case where DC denied warranty coverage for not using ATF+4. The dealer is the eyes and ears for DC when it comes to warranty, and the only reasons coverage is usually denied is for lack of maintenance, or abuse.

The ILMA is probably most PO'ed because they did not think of this way to limit competition themselves!

I have been in the lubricants business for over twenty years and I have a never seen situations like this. ATF is becoming so specialized by manufacturers that it is nearly impossible to build a product that will satisfy all manufacturers. When a manufacturer will not even let other companies test against a specification the government used to holler unfair competition. That is the case for AFT+4. We do not have access to a specification. We can deformulate and get a guess what it may take. But you can not submit for an approval!!!!!!

There are several companies that make a product that we believe would pass the testing and we warrant our selfs. I also work for a company that has a synthetic fluid that out performs the ATF+4 in bench test.

I, however, use only ATF+4 in my truck. I have a marketer who distributes this product to dealers so I can get it from them. I tow heavy and do not want to give them an excuse to void the warranty over a product that cost the about the same.
