Two days ago my transmittion started having problems shifting from 1st-2nd. It feels like the converter engages and then quickly disengages, and then repeats the process. However, I only notice this under light throttle. The fluid level is fine, and since I'm still under warranty will take it to the dealer on Monday. I also have had the slight hesitation in the engine that has been spoke about on other posts. Took it to the dealer for that problem, and still have it. Any ideas?? Would like to give the dealer some of our solutions to the possible fix. Thanks again!!

Find another dealer..... If he can not fix the first problem, How do you expect him to fix the second?????????????? #ad

C. Miller,

The problem you discribe is called "hunting", the 1st to 2nd shift is controlled by the governor solenoid. This hunting will happen a low speed and light throttle, such as driving threw a parking lot. The pressure to the solenoid is at the point that it can't make its mind up to stay in 1st or shift to 2nd.

I had the same problem with the stock transmission setup. Bill K. @ DTT has a different solenoid that moves the 1st to 2nd shift point up about 100 rpm's. This would cure the problem if the dealer cannot solve it for you. Hope this is of help.

I had the same problem. Dealer replaced the governor solenoid and that greatly reduced the problem but it did not go away.

They then replaced the valve body and I've had no more problems.

This was done under warranty.

I am really p#$%ed about our current 24V Diesel Auto Trannys! I owned a '65 Chrysler 300L Automatic 413'CI Dual-Point Police interceptor that kicked butt!!! I had absolutely not ONE problem with that awesome machine except when I let the transmission fluid go 1 qt low, and it once slipped a little. Why the h%^l can't Chrysler make a bullet-proof transmission for our diesels? It just doesn't make sense!

RollCast,

I cann't quite tell if the trany is hunting between 1st and 2nd. It shifts out of 1st and momentarily it feels like I loose power to the drivetrain, and then it shifts back to 1st again?? However, The transmission does definitely hunt from 2nd to 3rd around 30 mph while under light throttle. Again, thanks for everyone's input thus far!!

Just brought the truck home from the dealer today. They said "the actual gov. pressure voltage did not match the target voltage. " They replaced the gov. pressure sensor and the gov. pressure solenoids. This seems to have solved the problem, except the trany still hunts from 2nd to 3rd under light throttle between 30-35 MPH. This seems even more noticeable now. Any ideas as to what might solve this problem. Thanks for all the help!!

Did the dealer you took it to check throttle pressure adjustment? Sometimes even new trannys I've seen didn't have high enough line pressure which can cause a soft shift. Your torque converter doesn't engage until 3rd and 4th gear, but some of the trucks I've worked on with low line pressure had a complaint of a hesitation because the shift occurred too early.

YA! This is my first post WOOHAA!
HELLO ALL!

I had the same problem also. The first dealer I took it to jerked me around with this problem. The second one found the problem it was a sticking check valve in the valve body. They say its a common problem
on this transmission.
I want to thank all of the TDR menbers for the excellent info. If it was not for this great site I might still have this SOB problem!
