automatically setting the park brake

My 2019 1500 isn't an eco-diesel but I suspect the circuitry is somewhat the same. If I open the door while the truck is in gear it automatically shifts to park and engages the park brake. It is an aggravation to say the least. Is there a reflash or some other work around that will allow me to back up with the door open?

It is a safety feature that was part of a recall because some celebrity ran over himself when they got out of the vehicle when it was still in gear. If you have your seat belt buckled it should not do it.

I have occasions to need the door open while backing. I want to know if it can be turned off.

I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited rental unit last year that I could not back up to get in the garage at the MIL house... cameara saw the washer / dryer and would slam / lock the brakes when I got close, ALso same as you it would drop to park if the door was opened... Finally I had to shut it off and put in N and roll in by hand...

@bcbender I think the auto sensing crash thing is different then the door open deal. We have had that at say a grocery store, that mode can be turned off in the Uconnect.

@sag2 I read that part about the seat belt and did not mention it because it seemed too easy. But that is listed in there for sure. It's reads like it's an "AND" statement and unbuckled is in that sentence, with the door open and in R less then 3mph. It's super specific from what I read. It might have to do with the type of shifter with the knob not the old school lever.

I could not see where they listed instructions for how to disable that feature. I read thru maybe 4 other areas before posting that pdf. I try to make sure what I post is relevant to the topic for folks.

Maybe with AlphaOBD it can be disabled?

I would buckle the belt, then open door, pop in R and see if that works.

I often open the door when backing, especially single axle stuff that is super squirrelly. If that makes sense. Or something you truly can not see in the mirrors. I have an old ski mobile trailer that is super hard for me to back up empty with out looking.

I'm happy to report that with the seat belt buckled (and sitting on it) the truck will move forward and backward with the door open. Still a hassle, but better.

Just like the origin of TPMS sensors... too difficult to simply see a tire is low yep people still drive them that way.

This feature is called AutoPark. And yes, it's one of the worst things ever put on a vehicle.

I hate it with deep passion, so I permanently over ride it by using a seat belt extender which stays plugged in permanently. These are not the exact ones I bought, but they are nearly the same:

You can still use your seat belt normally when you want, but when you don't have the seat belt on the truck will still drive with the door open. VERY handy for hooking up a trailer, or moving the truck from the driveway to the garage quickly, or whatever a free American should desire to do. And a cheap fix too.

Sitting in the middle of the road the loaner Jeep would not move. I about had it towed. Turns out the driver door sensor was not seeing the door as closed. As I was moving vehicles around in the driveway seat belt off.

The fun one is keeping throttle on while using the brakes. Slow to respond throttle so keep the power on eliminates delay … and triggers a protection mode that cuts power.

My wife's Hyundai drives both of us "nuts" on all of the safety features that have been included in this car. Such as at a slight incline (driveway) the parking brake will automatic set when it is shifted to park with the engine running. We will than try and drive away and the car won't move until the brake is released.

Received my seatbelt extender today. Problem solved!! Add to that the instructions in the latest magazine on how to silence the seatbelt chime..........golden for when I pull up the ramp after launching the boat. Eat your heart out Big Brother.
