For those like me running the AM 2888 diesel tach:

Does anyone else notice the tach sometimes needs to 'warm up' before it starts reading accurately? It's kinda cute to watch, but most times when cold the tach can be stubborn and will not function, but as the truck gradually warms up and the heater kicks in the tach slowly wakes up and works like a charm.

Anyone else have the same phenomenon with theirs? ... . "phenomenon"... that's a big word for so early in the morning... and only half way through the first cup -

Max,

Where is your sensor probe positioned at? Instructions say to strap it over the alternator's lamination however, our 1st Gens. don't have laminations on the alternator. After some research and confirmation with other members on different forums, we have found that right along the middle at the 8 o'clock position is the "sweet spot" for the 2888 sensor probe. I've ran mine since 2004 with no "warming up" issues but I did have the *****est :-laf time trying to get a reading from the alternator at first.

Aloha,

Matt

Mine does this... I have it clocked about the 10:00 position. While we are on the subject, how do oyu go about calibrating the tach? What does turning the screw do exactly, and how do I know when it is right?

Sam, I can't believe you spelled phenomenon right! I had to look at your post to spell it. (and still had trouble) ;)

Jeff, want me to bring the optical tach to set it with? Just say so. :)

Pete-I'm saying so ;)

I'd likta edit my earlier post. I was under the hood all night swapping a radiator and took another look at my probe. It is at the 8 o'clock postition. Then it did the needle dance when I started it for the first 30 seconds or so.
