Autometer Cobalts

Well I guess it's time to get gauges already and am looking at Autometers' Cobalt gauges. Anyone using these? I also like the way the Isspro gauges look, but it seems to me that the cobalts would be a better quality. At least they had better be with the price difference between the two. Autometer advertises the stepper motor movement... what exactly does that mean? #ad

I'm runnin the Cobalts and love em! They're great gauges and easy to read. They're kinda bright, so I had them wired into the dimmer. Here's some pics, not the greatest quality though.

I looked at the Cobalts and decided against them after driving a friends truck at night with them. They are a very good looking gauge but extremely bright, still too bright for me with the dimmer.

The Cobalts are one of the best gauges available, the movements in them and the C's and Nexus Auto Meter's are stepper motors. A stepper is a mini electric motor that operates the needle of the gauge, they are extremely accurate and the response time is very fast as compared to a standard air core or bourbon tube movement, pricey as compared but the best available. The Cobalts and C2's etc are also lighted by LED's they are bright at night, too bright for some folks, but again Auto Meter has a special dimmer they sell that allows you to tune the level to exactly what you want. Call us if you have any questions, we have had lots of folks do what you're asking and have probably heard it before.

I have the NV series, which also has the stepper motor. It's a GREAT guage, but it's so stinking bright! I love having that problem versus too dim. Even with the dash dimmed as low as it will go, the NV series is still twice as bright as everything else.

This makes it harder to see the road.


I'd encourage you to consider the NV series in lieu of the Cobalt series. Why? The human eye is variably sensitive to light in different color ranges. In other words, at the same brightness, different colors appear different brightnesses.

When driving at night, night vision is very important. The best color for preserving night vision is RED. The worst is BLUE. In the color spectrum, red and blue are at opposite ends. Find something that is bright and blue at night, and notice how it takes your eye longer to focus on blue compared to other colors.

The green lighting of the NV is closer to Red than the blue is (obviously). That makes it a better choice for night visibility.



The ideal would be for Autometer to make a gauge series identical to the NVs, but with RED LED lighting. This would give you a very bright, readable gauge that didn't interfere with your night vision.

The gauges and pod came in three days after I ordered them..... wow! Talk about fast shipping! I did a quick install of the gauges in the pod and mounted them in the truck... . they look awesome!!! Cobalt are available in 0-30, 0-60 and 100PSI, the NV are the same as well.

Well, it only took a month to get the tech I wanted to install the pillar and gauges, but it was well worth the wait. S&S Dodge did a phenominal job, and the pillar and gauges look like they were there from the factory. Thanks again. I do have one question for you, though. The tech installed the trans temp sensor in one of the pressure ports for now, siting that the sensor was going to pick up the trans case temp, not the oil temp. He looked for the proper fittings, so he could drill into the pan but could find none. Am I missing fittings, or am I supposed to get a Mag-Hytec pan with an NPT fitting built-in? Thanks again.
