DOES ANYONE KNOW THE NUMBER OF POLES AND PULLEY DRIVE RATIO IN OUR ALTERNATOR? I'M ABOUT TO HOOK-UP A DIESEL TACH BY AUTOMETER 2888.

1991 250 CUMMINS DIESEL DODGE TRUCK LE 3/4 TON. EARLY YEAR. NON-INTERCOOLED. A/C, JUST INSTALLED REBUILD HEAVY-DUTY 727 TORQUE FLITE 3-SPEED AUTOMATIC FOR TOWING AND A GEAR VENDOR. WOW! 3. 07 DIFF. RANCHO ADJUSTABLE REAR, BILSTEIN FRONT, K&N FILTER, AUX-COMBO TOOLBOX WITH 40 DIESEL GALLON TANK. THIS TRUCK HAS A GRAND TOTAL OF 75,000 MILES. AUTOMETER TRANMISSION TEMP INDICATOR.

CBottomiey: I dont have a answer for you tach question sorry.
I see in your sig you have a Gearvendor on your 727 how do you like it? I am putting a 89 motor and trans in a 84 crewcab with 410 gears and thinking abought getting a Gear vendor unit is it worth the $$$$? they want for one
I also need to do the tach thing on mine thanks Carey

CBottomley,

Don't know how many poles, but I hooked up an Isspro tach to my alternator... . while at idle I moved the switch around to experiment and there was only one position that gave me a rpm reading anywhere near the idle speed I thought I was at. I set it there, then checked it out a few days later with an optical tach and it was right on (ok, with 25 rpm), from idle to 2000 rpm.

I just installed the same tach, and i put the sensor on the alternator . It said to put it over the laminated area of the alternator, but mine doesn't have one so i put it in the middle. I'm getting a signal, but it seems like it reads different rpm's at times. (like lower at times idling, etc) I haven't calibrated it yet just set it close to where i thought it should be idling at. If the alternator doesn't have the laminated area is the middle area i put it over correct?

Ive had an Autometer Diesel Tach on mine for about 2 years works great!!!I'll send a pic of were i installed it at. Mine is to the left of the Alt. vents on the solid part of the aluminum. Like i said ill send some pics.

HELLO CKNOOP

I LOVE MY GEAR VENDOR. IT WORKS GREAT! I'M GLAD TO HAVE THAT 3RD OVERDRIVE. I HAVEN'T CHECKED DIESEL FUEL ECONOMY YET. BEFORE G. V. I WAS GETTING 18 MPG WILL A LOAD IN THE BACK OF MY TRUCK!

ANTRIM93

PLEASE DO SUBMIT YOUR PICTURES OF YOUR DIESEL TACH. I'M VERY INTERESTED. COULD YOU TELL A COUPLE OF US HOW YOU HOOKED IT UP. LIKE WHERE TO MOUNT THE SENSOR IN THE EXACT POSTION ON THE ALTERNATOR SINCE THERE IS NO LAMINATION AND HOW YOU FOUND OUT THE DRIVE RATIO AND NUMBER OF POLES ON THE ALTERNATOR? ALSO ANY INFO YOU CAN GIVE US ON THE CALIBRATION PROCEDURE. MAYBE PASTOR BOB CAN COMMIT ON ANY OF THESE ISSUES.

I'M ALMOST DONE WITH WIRING UP FOR A TRAILER

(7-FLAT CIRCULAR PLUG) AND BRAKE MODULE FOR DUAL AXLE TRAILER. THEN I'M GOING TO INSTALL THE 2888 DIESEL TACH, VAC/BOOST, PYRO. THE TACH WILL GO ABOVE THE SPEEDOMETER AND THE BOOST & PYRO WILL GO IN A DUAL PILLAR ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR INPUT GUYS. CHARLES

I'm also interested in some pics because I have a diesel tach on hand and I need to intall it.

If the tach was on a truck just like mine before, will it still need to be calibrated?

Im very sorry i havnt been able to get the pics . Work has been very crazy. I'll try tomorro. As far as calibration i went off of my old mans 97 it has same gear ratio same tires and at 70 mph he is at 2000rpm thats how i set mine and later i checked it at my buddy's shop with a special meter on the balancer @ an idle it was right on. I know that wont really help most of you guys but thats how i got mine. I didnt now about the poles ether on the alt. Also if the probe is in the wrong place it will give eratick readings like idle rpm will bounce and the when alt. is under load (turn headlights on) it will smooth out. I attached mine to the smoothe part of the alt. to the bottom left of the vents at about 8 o clock. Hope this helps. I will still try to get pics.

Hey wheres those pics? Got my boost pyro and alt tach hooked up tonight and I'm wondering if I put the ring terminal on the correct post of the alternator. ? Tach is not working. As the instructions said, when 12 volts is connected to it, it will reset to zero, it did. But no movement when truck running. Have it wired to the bottom post -stator maybe? on the alternator. Bro in law says thats the only place it could go, as the other two posts are just regulators?? Something like that. A pic would be nice. BTW this might not be good, 35* out, running empty, 23 psi boost, but 1200*F preturbo. Darn non-intercooled... Seemed a little hot, for empty against the governor in 4th, stock as far as I know, tamper caps? still on the full fuel and governor screw. Anyways any ideas on the tach before I take it back to Scheids? Bill

bgilbert,Is this how you hooked it up?

Bill, I have an Isspro alt tach as well. You will have to remove the alternator from the truck to hook a wire to one of the rectifiers.

Remove the rear cover and you will see several screw terminals. Hook wire with a ring eye or horseshoe terminal to one of these.

This will give the tach a signal. I don't recall where to set the switch, but once it's hooked up, turn the switch while at idle and one should be close.

Then you'll need a hand held optical tach to verify it. I would check it at around 2000 rpm (block of wood,or whatever in the linkage) with the hand held... ... . then make sure the Isspro is there... if not make an adjustment.

Good luck... e-mail me here -- email address removed -- if you have more questions or get stuck.

Jay

This is from an earlier thread you started. Good luck.

Ok here is the Tach that I have... . We might as well start there to make sure we are all using this. For othe Makes are different.

Cold tach reads weird.

Hey bill,

Don't freak out if your autometer does not work below freezing. Mine is pegged at the bottom and then swings to verticle until the interior of the truck warms up. Otherwise it works fine.

I'm in the process of hooking up this tach as well. I have the probe in place, all I have to do is hook up my light bulb lead, and ground.

I put some green acrylic paint on the bulb so it would match the green backlights of the rest of my gauges.

Ok, I adjusted mine so it works, and everything is fine.

BUT: my tach will not read below 1500rpm, and while in gear, if I drop below 1500rpm, instead of going down from 1500 it starts going back up.

It also read idel at 1500.

I calibrated it so it works fine, it just doesn't work below 1500rpm.

What is going on here?

IM not to sure about that one. Sounds like its in the calibration. One more thing when running the wires back into the cab of the truck try to keep them seperate from all other wires because being that the tach wire is carrying a singnal like pulses noise from other wires can effect the reading that you get sometimes making it eratick or jumpy. The main thing i found is to make sure the position of the probe is in the correct place on the Alt. Hope all this makes sense... .

Antrim93,Thanks for the pic's !!I have the sensor in the area you showed in the pic,and i'm experiencing similar symptoms that CB is. The tach seems to work right, and then when you let off it doesn't always go down to idle speed. I called Autometer yesterday 'cause i was ready to freak out:mad: ... One thing they told me was to keep the sensor wires away from the field (wires?). I ran the wiring alongside the pyrometer wiring could this cause interference?I "calibrated" the tach approx where i thought it was idling. :confused:One things for sure, they could have provided a little more wire for the sensor leads.

I have my sensor wires bundled up with all my other wires up against the firewall. I bet the magnetic fields created by those wires is doing something.

I put my sensor exactly like in that picture. I ran the wires from there straight across to to the fender well, and back to the firewall and across the top of the firewall.

CB, Where's the bulb at,and how'd ya get it out?Do you have to remove the circuit board on the back?

 Man,This tach is driving me NUTS... . #@$%!
