I just installed a Autometer EGT gauge (phantom) in my 2004. 5. The gauge reads just above 2 when the truck is cold. I have never seen this gauge at 0. is this normal or is there something I did wrong or is there something wrong with the gauge. Power is off when the key is turned off.

Most EGT gauges are thermocouples... these units are small voltage generators and require no outside source of power... on connection usually is to the light circuit to light it at night... .

Most of these are wheatstone bridges... two metals fused together and when they see heat they respond with a small trickle voltage that the meter sees and makes a meter movement... .

Connections are very important and most of these gauges don't like soldered connections or loose connections..... the lead is usually calibrated to the gauge, if you have shortened the lead, soldered it, or have a loose connection you could have something that is not standard and a bad reading... . It will never go to 0 per say because the outside temperature is not zero... .

Usually these gauges have a 3-4% accuracy range... some are as high as 10% this is a + or - number based on full scale deflection of the meter... . so if the max range is say 2000 degrees and its a 5% meter it could be off as much as 100 degrees.....

Hope this helps... .

So it pouring out just right now and the garage is about a 300 foot run. Don't want to get soaked but I'll check my Autometer Phantom Pyro to see if it freezes or returns to zero (I have a 2006). I know the fuel pressure gauge locks at waht it was reading when you shut down, but can't remember the pyro. by the way did you install a boost gauge? Does it flutter on you when nearing 25-30 PSI. mine does this ridiculous flutter thing, called autometer, standard send it to us, ground ship it back. Tried to explain I'm in Alaska and ground ship can take like 3-4 weeks each way... Guy couldn't have cared less... Anyway get back to ya tomorrow... . Shane

ive got the same gauges on the same truck and it jumps all over the place when its cold. . didnt at first. . does now though. . ive thought it was shorted. . makes wierd noises. . jumps around. . and other times it works perfect. . and i live in AK too

I have Autometer Phantom's. Boost gauge flutters at hight boost. EGT doesn't drop below 200 when I shut the truck off. Fuel pressure makes all kinds of annoying noises as the needle moves. Hope that answers your questions. Seems to be a common problem. I used to think Autometer made the best gauges. Not so sure anymore.

My pyro locks at 200 when I shut down... Has anyone put a snubber in for the fuel pressure gauge? I was told I didn't need one for a 2006 but seems autometer thinks I need it. If so, where did you get it... And I have been dissappointed with these autometers as well... Shane

A number of years ago I worked for a company that used and installed lots of meters... . and I found that price has a lot to do with quality... .

On the boost gauge that flutters... ... take a small chunk of brass or steel, something that just presses into the line... . an before you install it, drill a very small hole through the center of it..... this should serve the same purpose as mentioned above for the full pressure gauge..... this tiny hole allows the pressure to pass through to the gauge but tends to dampen out the shock waves of the turbo and the induction system.....

Hope this helps... .

Thanks to all who posted. I think it is a common problem and I am going to get with auto meter tomorrow. Have a great day. Flooding here in Kansas City Area. be glad your not here.
