Finally got my gauges--

I decided on the 0-60 Boost and 0-1600 EGT Autometer Ultra lights. They look great, I'm putting them in tomorrow, but just out of curiousity, what color condom goes on the bulb? It comes with green and red. I plan to use the green one to match the factory gauge lights as close as I can.

Any opinions from ultra light owners? I thought I heard about a blue bulb somewhere... .

What looks the best??? I have a dual pillar replacement and plan to be creative and use it as a replacement pillar.

Thanks

Kurt

I have the same gauges as you do, installed them a week ago. I used the green bulb cover seems to match the oem color fairly well !! So far I like the gauges and the wife likes them also. In fact she can't even tell that I took the original A-pillar out and used the full pillar as a replacement. #ad
so I am in good with the wife #ad

How much were the gauges? I am new to this and just learning. What are the best gauge deals out there. What sites to check? Thanks.

Bowhunter,

Try the bulb condoms. If you don't like them (I didn't) see these threads:
https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum3/HTML/001054.html

Bowhunter, An update on the thread. The Victor bulbs went from blue to green in a few months. I guess the heat changed the coating. They still looked good though. I recently swapped the Victor bulbs with APC Colored Blue bulbs. The glass used is supposed to be colored, unlike the Victor bulbs that were probably coated. They should keep their original color. I find the APC blue bulbs a little too dim for my taste.

Blake,

See some gauge set-ups from different members & manufactures in this thread: https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum3/HTML/002966.html

I like Autometer #ad

I used the Autometer blue bulb condoms. Got them at the local speed shop. They match the interior the best.

How is the EGT gauge wired in? Do the trucks come with provisions or does a probe need to be tapped into the manifold? Thanks.

The manifold must be tapped, I used a 11/32 bit and drilled the manifold, then tapped it with a 1/8 NPT. Worked very well.

I put the green in for now, but I'll have to find the blue ones and put them in later.

Cheapest place I have found for Autometer Ultalights is Genos Garage. TDR has the link

I'm very happy with the autometers

Bowhunter:

You are likely missing the thermocouple kit, which is a seperate option on most of these autometer gauges, I can't tell you the number of these people have brought me for installation and we look at their parts and realize they are short of the thermocouple wire and probe. Once they get this kit addtion, they are good to go.

The thing I dislike about them is the three wires molded into the egt gauge necessitating a longer harness and more bulk of wiring bundles behind the a-pillar, which is already tight. Its a bit more roomy in the 98 ups, 94-97 a-pillar covers have less access space behind them.

Enough of my . 02 worth.

Good luck.

Andy

Andy,

I was worried about that when I ordered the gauges as a kit from Genos, but when I got the EGT gauge, it had the probe and the fitting made onto the assembly. After I tapped the manifold, it screwed right in and it works great.

My truck is still basically stock, with the exception of a custom air filter assembly, Thanks (b holcomb).

I can pull about 26-28 psi of boost when accelerating hard and the EGT's stay between 650 to 750 when cruising. This will work great until I put the #10 in. Then I'll really have to watch the EGTS.

Do my boost #'s sound about right for a stock setup?

I just put my guages in today. I haven't hooked my trans temp guage up yet, though I have everything done except installing the heat sensor probe. I'm going to order the $40 kit that Janetty has for that. I was really intimidated about drilling and taping that manifold, but I dove into it, and it really wasn't bad. Just follow instructions about keeping the metal shavings out, and getting the ones out that do fall in. And, keep that tap straight when you start taping. I had to come up with a smaller tap wrench than the one I started out with. Glad I did it myself! Good luck on yours.
