Project #4 Adding control

my 2. 5 year old Autometer Z-series pyro has been acting up as of late. It bounces around a lot, and sometimes shows 1200*F when I know for a fact that I'm at or below 600*F.

Anyway, do you think it's the gauge itself or the thermocouple? All connections are good and tight. Also, how is autometer's customer service and repair? 2. 5 years old, don't think it'll be getting warrantied. :{

Hey Josh

Wonder whats up with your gauge? My isspro has problems, but it reads to low. A little smak on the gauge pod and bingo works great. I have a faulty conection somewhere, but dont have the ambition to go looking for it. The cool part is that after I put my new head on it runs alot cooler. Hope you get it fiixed.

ya, it was 33*F outside this morning... my pickup had been running for 5 minutes, I drove 1/8 mile and was coasting downhill for about 1/4 mile and glanced at the gauge and it showed 1100*F and climbing. Um, don't think so!

Gonna give Rip a call... see what he has to say. I'm guessing the thermocouple is toast after one too many +1700*F runs.

Snowracer,

Do you have the older model pyro guage that had the seperate "Module" that was apart from the guage? It looks like a black box.

no... wires run straight from pyro into the gauge. I'm gonna tear into it tomorrow and make sure I can't find anything specific wrong with it, then if I can't Rip's gonna send me a whole new one to trouble-shoot with. It acted fine the rest of the day today... just seems to be when it's cold out in the early morning or late evening. Maybe it's the gauge and not the thermocouple... I'm not sure yet.

If your thermocouple is like mine with the bolt on connections about a foot or so away from the end of the thermocouple. Check the connections at that point. I have had the wire come loose in the crimp on end that AutoMeter uses.
