Just recently installed an Autometer tach (#2888) that simply will not work for me. Came with a sensor probe that straps onto the alternator. Instructions say to position probe over the laminations of the alt. I have tried every possible position and it will not work. Contacted Autometer who in turn sent me a new sensor probe with wiring at no charge; still doesn't work. My alt. is the factory one and has no laminations. Autometer insists it is the correct application for my rig. When contacting the performance auto shop where I purchased it, they refer me to Autometer. The tach has been on display on my dash for a few weeks due to limited time to attempt to work on it. It has worked irratically in the past for a few seconds and then it just quits and returns to '0'. Anyone with solutions? '92 W250 LE w/ dually conversion.

I believe on the 92 + 93 trucks there is a wire connector under the dash (left of the steering wheel) for a tach feed. Do a search in this forum and you should be able to find out more specific info. Hopefully it would work with your particular tach and be more accurate than an alternator probe.

Welcome! I installed the sensor at about the 8 o'clock position on the alternator and in the center (roughly). It can be fussy about where it is positioned. Do a search on it and you will find lots of info and some pictures. (I believe CB Parker posted some pics?)

I put a Isspro Alternator tach on my truck and it works great other than when ever you put the turn signal on it jumps a little if you turn the lights on it dosen't . take your alternator off of your truck and take it to your local alternator/starter repair shop and have them install a tap wire from I believe it was the stator then you hook that wire into the wire Where the probe is hooked . The cost at the shop is only $15 to $20 the only reason I istalled one of these tachs was that my truck dosen't have a speed sensor on the front of the engine.

Good luck

GBechtold ... I may be out in left field here but it sounds like your light issue is a ground problem. Maybe not a good connection... check it.

Also the 89-91. 5 trucks need a different harness to hook up a tach... the 91. 5-93 years have the wiring under the dash as mentioned above.

pb. .

Yeah I never got that far as to check the ground connection but it puzzles me that the needle won't bounce when the lights are on.

Just out of curiosity, what does the connector look like? My truck is a 91. 5 and I'd like to put a tach in but heard none of the 91s had the connector. Any info would be appreciated.

Travis the plug is a flat black 4 wire. It should be to the left of the steering column. About half way between the dash and the firewall.

Autometer tach

I installed the same tach last year, and i have yet to get it to work properly. I know that you have to calibrate it using an optical tachometer, and i haven't found someone who has one. I've tried putting the sensor in several different locations, and still no luck. :{ Replacing the bulb is another NIGHTMARE ! GOOD LUCK.

Very cool, I'll give a look for it. Do you know what color the wires are, I don't have a manual.

Hey Travis here is the wire colors on my truck

Orange-for lights

Light Blue-signal to tach from PCM

Black-listed red in manual-ignition

Black-ground

My tachometer would not work without a wiring harness from ISSPRO. There is some sort of filter in the wire. Comes with ends already crimped on also, dont have to cut the plug off like me.
