TNHotshot, I think you should use 4hi, expectially on an 1/8 mile track. If you go to a 1/4 mile track use 4hi for only the first 100 feet then push it into 2 hi, if it doesn't go out let off for a pump on the throttle and it'll disingage. If you can leave at the point were the breaks wont hold your going to have some hellatious 60' times and no tire spin.

DieselB59:

I'm curious; are you the member who has
the first name of Christopher? If so,
I recall reading an article you sent in
to the TDR Magazine several issues ago
when you first had "Auto Wurks" do the
modifications to your truck.

I have a question about your truck.
Your signature shows "520 Rear Wheel
H. P. and 800 ft. /lbs. Torque. " Why
is the torque reading so low?

I recently had my 96' placed on the
dyno at the "Scheid Diesel Rally"
which was held in Terre Haute,
Indiana back in September. My truck
seems to have "modest" H. P. /Torque
gains compared to yours but my truck
showed a torque reading of "1,069" on
"Scheid's Mustang Dynamometer. "
Do you know what causes the
difference in those readings?

Thanks!

Okay guys, I will answer each one of your inquiries as I've received them.
1. I am talking about the cam that controls the valves of the engine, not the injection pump cam. The injection pump cam is a wild grind and is too hot for the street.
2. Propane is "okay" for a stock to slightly modified street truck, but is too volatile for an extreme case. I've seen pistons with holes in them when running propane against too hot of an EGT. Nitrous oxide is much safer for BOMBed engines, because the oxygen in the nitrous will only react with an excess of fuel. It cannot and will not burn in and of itself.
3. I had a chance to have my truck on a dyno at a local truck "jamboree". It was pulling a best of 517 horsepower on the dyno. The problem was that the owner of the dyno forgot his 26 ft. extension for the signal from the tach, which you need to measure torque. He never figured anyone would ask him for a torque reading, because he didn't think anyone would have a Diesel there. He wasn't very keen to the Diesel population there. I leave in my signature 800+ ft. lbs. of torque because the last clutch I broke loose was rated at 800 ft. lbs. I can state for sure that it's at least that, so I say 800 plus and I can't be told I'm pulling someones leg!

520 Rear Wheel H. P. and 800+ ft/lbs Torque = 15. 5 sec @ 97 mph with the rear wheels spinning in 5th gear going through the traps in the quarter mile. No slicks here, pal, no fancy auto transmission, just the truck in full street trim, 7400 lbs. of Auto Wurks Diesel/BD Performance raging, fire-breathing DIESEL POWER

damm dieselb , autowurks has raised the bar a few notches to many #ad
. i am toying with the idea of building a 24V ram 2wd dragtruck, but don't think i can AFFORD to get those type of numbers . is the cam a custom grind or an off the shelf higher hp cummins application ?

It is a custom grind that we had to have redone a few times due to tolerance problems. The whole process took about six months from start to finish.

520 Rear Wheel H. P. and locomotive level torque = 15. 5 sec @ 97 mph with the rear wheels spinning in 5th gear going through the traps in the quarter mile. No slicks here, pal, no fancy auto transmission, just the truck in full street trim, 7400 lbs. of Auto Wurks Diesel/BD Performance raging, fire-breathing DIESEL POWER

DieselB59:

I see that you have changed part of
your signature from "800+ft/lbs torque"
to "locomotive level torque. "

I hope I wasn't the cause of that!
I was just wondering why there was
such a difference in the torque
readings. I am fairly new to all
of this and am just trying to learn.

<font color=blue>Locomotive Level of Torque huh? Guess I just can't find the humor in it since I work for the railroad... .

EMD SD70 - 4000hp
159,000 lbs of tractive effort (torque)

Union Pacific just ordered 1000 of these locomotives!

Heh "Kat":

159,000 lbs. of torque?? WOW!!!

You never answered my question in one
of the other posts. Did you ever get
the HX-40 for your truck? If so, how
do you like it?

<Font color=blue>Actually I did answer John... if you go read it #ad

But no HX40 on the truck yet still waiting for the manifold to get here supposed to ship this week sometime even tho it was ordered Oct 3rd! The turbo makes a wonderful conversation piece tho! #ad

I hate waiting. #ad

I'll look up a 6000hp AC unit see how much torque that bad boy has... ... also I 'll look up some steam engines too tonight.

UPDATE #ad

The Auto Wurks Diesel race truck project ended the racing season this past weekend with a final blast of 11. 53 seconds at 115 mph. A rollcage is in the works during the offseason and bigger slicks as we've gone two seasons on these and they're just plain worn out and not holding the launch anymore.
After a season which was more pain than gain early out, it concluded in a way that made all those late shop nights (and overnights) worthwhile. My truck will continue to be working in development of new power during the offseason. After all, the initial feud between myself and James D. Ray (owner of the original LSR truck) began all this race your Ram stuff and it just stemmed into what you guys all call B. O. M. B. It's been a while since I've heard from James and I thank him for being a true competitor and all around nice guy. Another TDR moment.

Chris, man, after reading that signature, I hope you and Auto Wurks can make it out to Muncie in June for a drag race! I'll post more later on a great weekend I'm working on.

Well I guess we're just gonna have to haul out good old U96 on her trailer so she can meet all the fine folks of the Great Lakes TDR Chapter. We like road trips.

DieselB59, Your putting the water in pre turbo? If so why does it have to be such a high pressure. I remember a water injection system used on the old corvair that just used boost pressure on one side of a SS tank to push water out the other and into the turbo.

Chris How much water are you using? I set up a water injection system two summers ago and there wasn't ever enough water being used to hydro lock the motor. I was just using it when my EGT got too high on hills.

DIESELB5. 9:
what are the horsepower and torque readings on the AutoWurks truck? that sounds like an HVAC match-up to me!!Please e-mail me the #'rs if you get a chance... i may not get a chance to get back on this topic for a bit... i want bragging rights at work with all the gasser guys! Thanks! To show them what we over on the BOMB-side of town can do.

Indeed, I need to stress the fact that the auto transmission in the racer is used ENTIRELY with the torque converter out of lockup. This is for durability and so that we don't keep blowing transmissions every other run. I'm sure the truck will have gone much faster in lockup, but the race season definitely would have been cut short because of it.

Are you going to offer the Injection pump cam or the engine cam for sale??
Does your injection pump cam make the idle real lumpy like the pullers?? Is that why you said it's not very streetable??

Both cams were custom grinds and make the engine idle like a gas V8 with a high lift cam in it. Probably like something the pullers are using.
