Aux. Transmission Cooler suggestion?

Hi everyone with an automatic transmission. At our local RamRunners meeting last night I got a good look at a truck that had an additional trans cooler mounted under the bed of the truck that had a thermostat control on it. He said that the fan ran quite often at a 170 setting, so my question is has anyone had any experience with a particular brand of cooler and if so would you recommend them. I am currently looking at a permacool cooler made specifically for the Dodge Cummins Truck. http://www.perma-cool.com

I got mine from summit racing with a 25,000lb rating w/thermostat and fan for 129. 00.

MCrossley, Since we're already running with two OEM coolers in our diesel Rams, wouldn't a 3rd be a bit much. Especially when exposed under the truck bed ?

Well, that is a good question, The gentleman who had it had his set at 170 for the fan to kick in and he said it was on quite a bit empty, so my real question I guess is what the temps normally run. I have a 12,000# 5th wheel that is going to be getting towed over the Sierras this summer in very warm temps and a $100 seems like a very cheap insurance policy again boiling the trans.

Mike. . My son said that that brand is one of the better on the market. . we were talking about a oil cooler for my rig. . they make a big one with a fan mounted on it... [my son works for Summit in Reno]. . Gary

Hey Gary, I talked with a gentleman named Cody at Summit this afternoon and he was telling me that they make one of the better ones also. I am looking at the one that is set up for the Dodge Cummins it's only about $100 and it has the fan with the thermostat.

A few years back I had a Fraud product with a serious overheating problem. I ordered the largest (I think) B&M trans cooler from Summit , to use as an engine oil cooler. I mounted a fan on it too, and put it in front of my A. C. condenser. I thought it was blowing more heat back into the engine bay, and I took it off. Anyway, I got to looking at the cooler a while back , and measuring the one that is oem with the Cummins, and decided that It wouldn't take a whole bunch of fiddling to retrofit the larger one . I am glad this thread just came up, as I am due for a transmission service, and that is the time to do stuff like that. I'll have to take another look at that and see if I want to do it. Anyway, my thoughts on the matter were that it would probably be better to put a larger cooler in that location than to put one under the bed where I thought it (with the help of the fan) would suck up a lot of mud and stuff and be a p. i. t. a. to clean.

I don't know if it's still available but the FIRST GEN trucks had an underbed transmission oil cooler as a factory option. It is a very well made piece and per the factory owners manual for my 93 it raises the towing capacity by 2000 pounds. Maybe it could be ordered from chrysler or someone knows who actually made it for them?

I also have 3 coolers on my 93. The truck came from the factory with 2, the third was added at the dealer so it may not be a Dodge item.
Under normal driving conditions, the fan doesn't turn on but when pulling a 6000 # trailer up a grade on a warm day it does start up. There is no mistake when it starts-sounds like a jet engne spooling up ! Usually only runs for a few minutes then shuts off. The cooler mounts on the drivers side toward the front of the bed. Is about 14" square, mounts horizontal with the fan on top.

I'm with the group that needs oil cooling rather than transmission fluid cooling. My oil heats up quickly, but my transmission never bumps 170. I figure my synthetic transmission fluid can handle that just fine.
