Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) auxiliary fuel filter

Is anybody running an auxiliary fuel filter ? What kind is it and how did you mount it are there any options besides the fass or air dog system

I have the Fuel Manger Filter and pump from Blue Ridge Diesel. It is a small pump and filter water separator. I mounted it back close to the fuel tanl so that it pulls the fuel out of tank and sends it to the lift pump at about 10-12 lbs of pressure, that way the lift pump does not have to pull the fuel all the way from the tank. This gives me 20# at idle 16# at freeway speed and 14# at WOT. I put it on about 4 years ago and have been happy so far. It is a little pricey at 329.00 plus shipping.

My filter housing always has what looks like gravel in it is this normal ? Is it from the fuel or is it getting in through the fuel tank module ?

Is it hard like gravel? Or does it only look like gravel. If the later most likely it is water, which kinda of looks grayish and odd shaped like gravel.

It is hard and gritty and feels and looks like gravel

As for an aux filter, there are a ton of options out there. Personally, I'd run something like the FS1212 Fleetguard fuel filter. Basically the same filter you'd get on an Airdog/Fass. Fleetguard Fuel Filter Head 142784S for the FS1212 filter. Mount that up on the frame in front of the tank and change every 5K if you find some trash like you're describing. Maybe 10k once it cleans up.

Use two heads for a dual water separator and fuel filter setup.....

Fuel here most of the time . Before I put this in was getting fuel at the local Sinclair station .

Filter heads like HH has, fabed up a bracket to hang on the extra long bottom bolts of the Brake Master cylinder ran fuel line out of stock fuel canister to the Fabed up Cat filter to the CP3 don't know if it will work that way on your Gen.

IF your filters are good on your pump, you need to keep an eye on your truck... sounds like someone has tried to sabotage it.... Shouldn't any sand be making it in there, unless you got it at the Sinclair station, which I guess is possible....

On a side note, those are neat old pumps, darn near bulletproof....

Yip that old gas boy has pumped probly 2 million gallon of gas over the years its had a couple rebuilds over the years but it still keeps pumping the meter even works it won't zero anymore but it still counts. I've had a locking gas cap on the truck since I bought it . I do have a leak on top of the tank module somewhere I haven't really looked to see what it is might be getting in there I better go see what I can find in that

Where do you get those heads ? Did you just splice into the fuel line?

Another question with the gravel in the filter housing can that get into the injection pump? Or does the fuel come in the bowl and then go through the filter and out the top center of the filter??

It almost sounds like your describing asphaltenes. Asphaltenes are a result of ULSD polymerizing (generally from the heat of being repeatedly circulated through the fuel system). The fuel reacts with the oxygenation of being circulated and breaks down, leaving behind small black deposits that will plug a filter SOLID.

However, this usually happens during the warmer months, and the deposits are not hard like stones. Very strange.

Are you sure that its a Sand? roll a bit of it between your fingers and see if its Gritty or mushy. What color is it? In the years I hauled fuel there are tanks out there that are a biology experiment going on in then. It could be that its a type of growth that sometimes happens in OLD Diesel fuel tanks and should have a algaecide dumped in the Store tank to kill it, Most time it happens in warm climates and is Hard as Hell to actually get rid of if ever at all without replacing the in-ground fuel tank.

That stuff acts just like your filter is plugged BECAUSE it IS!

The filter head part number 142784S is a Fleetguard number, and any Cummins parts dealer should be able to get it.... There are other heads out there that will work, I just use the Fleetguard.... I splice the line, using good Gates Barricade fuel line, or something Biodiesel compatible.

As for Asphaltene, if you do have it in the tank, or in your storage tank, if you recently filled your tanks with diesel after sitting a long time, it can come loose, as well as rust, if the tank has sat a long time empty. The line on your fill nozzle could be going bad, too, leaving rust or rubber pieces in your tank.... And if there is any debris or asphaltene in your tank, when you fill up with something that has biodiesel in it, the biodiesel is like acetone.... it'll make that stuff come loose, and guess where it goes.... In the filter, which is supposed to stop it from going in your pump, which is REALLY BAD. A good quality filter such as Wix or Fleetguard should stop anything too large....

This pump has sat a long time and the tank about 6 months hose is new.

I bought an XX-Fuel filter system and am very happy with it. Later on I plan on getting a FASS lift pump, but didn't want it all in one unit. This mounts on the two back bolts of the driver seat and tucks near the trans/front gear box. It's easy to get to, change the filters and 'plenty' of clearance. I use Donaldson filters only. But XX-fuel seems to be out of business. So if you like something like this, you'd have to fab it. I have the full installation instructions if needed.

That seems like a nice-looking and well-made remote filter mount bracket. If XX is out of business, does anybody know of a source for a similar mount bracket?
