I am having one built to fit under my toolbox in the back, this will be aprox 50 gals and will also hold toolbox up so I can load it well,it will have a aluminm checker false front on it for looks ,this method was half price verses going all aluminm ,it is going to be 10 guage steel and I will put the fill neck inside my tool box, I am having a half inch coupling on the bottom corner so I can put a spin on filter under the truck, then I will run stainless tubing to the front under the cab so I can put a manual valve (handle sticking into cab floor) then I plan on running tubing back to my vapor line that drops into tank. this is my plan any how.
My friend and fellow vol fireman is building it,he builds fire truck bodies and the likes, does quality work, I cant hardly wait #ad

The extra capacity is nice, allows you to kinda look around a little before you have to re-fuel. The only downside for me is , now I don't have room for my tool box in the front of the bed. bg

Look at the ones on sale in the Northern tool Cat. pg. 120. Diamond Plate Alum. Combo. DOT approved. The 90 gal. I want is only $499. the smaller ones are 50 bucks cheaper.

What has been everyone's experience with an auxiliary fuel tank? I am considering a tank around 30-40 gallons. Any comments would be appreciated. I have an '01 Quad 2x2 sb.

Thanks Bill

I think you'll love it. Get a good one. I couldn't do without mine. I traded trucks last year on vacation. The dealer unhooked it from the 98 but could not hook it up in the 01. I sure did miss it till I got home and had it hooked up.

I have a question after finding out that the Transfer Flow replacement tank is only 54 gallons and uses the original Dodge fuel sender. A possible alternative, other than an aft-axle tank, is to install the Transfer Flow 30 gallon across the bed tank which is only 9" in width. Anyway, my question relates to having an A. R. E. bed cap on the truck 100% of the time. Is it legal/advisable to open the side cap window and fill the tank through the window? (The cap design will not allow an external fill).

Hey Stan,

Transfer Flow has a exterior 'side fill' kit but will only sell if you bought a tank from them and you need more than 8 inches of 'meat'on the shell to mount it. I guess your ARE is less than that.

Some shell companies now offer windows which hinge up and offer access inside. Is your ARE like that? You could fuel that way if you were real careful not to spill... .

But I killed the whole idea of an in bed tank for me, because I was convinced by enough people in the business that I was going to have diesel odor in the bed of the truck no matter what!! Even if it was just normal venting. Uck. #ad
Nobody mentioned anything about it being 'illegal'. I can't imagine why it would be, as long as it was a "legal" safe, fuel tank.

So that's why I'm shopping for tank(s) under the truck. I'd rather have a spare tire in my bed than have those persistant diesel odors! I get enuf of that at a fuel stop!

Why didn't DC give us a decent sized tank to begin with? #ad

Good luck searching

Hey Stan, I have a 98 gal Transfer Flow tank in the bed of my truck. I also have an A. R. E. bed cap that is on the truck all the time. The side fill provided by transfer flow does work with my bed cap. I am pleased with the transfer flow system.

Thanks for the feedback Rich & Paul. The side fill will not work on my setup - there is only 5" of fiberglass before the window. I do have both side windows that open so access to a tank would be easy.

I did look at the Northern Tool and Equipment catalog and am impressed with their aluminum fuel tanks - only problem is that they all come with tool boxes on top which I don't need.

I have heard nothing but praise for Transfer Flow with the only concerns being price and the use of a computer system to track gallons in each tank. Guess I'll look for a while for a simple aluminum tank and a simple in the cab switch that will turn on a small electric fuel pump to fill from the aux tank to the main one - same setup that was on my previous truck.

I did send for the Transfer Flow catalog and will check out the aft axle tank for physical size -couldn't find the dimensions on their web site. My wife says I have a sexy looking rear end with the Mag-Hytec cover and the view shouldn't be blocked by a fuel tank. Thanks again

I only need the extra fuel when towing the 5ver every other weekend or so during the summer. I'm considering dropping one of the plastic molded tanks in the bed (Northern Tools) and installing a quick disconnect between it and the main fuel tank. That way I get the best of both worlds, extra fuel for the trip, extra hauling capacity at home.

Anyone done it? How difficult a task am I looking at?

Banshe, you may have a good idea. I checked the Northern catalog and see the tanks you are talking about. The only thing I wonder about is how they would hold up on the road. I checked in a Boater's World catalog and they have a number of portable marine tanks all the way up to 50 gallons ($199). The tanks come with a fuel gauge sendor but the add doesn't give specific dimensions. Might be worth looking into.
