I am planning to install a fuel tank/tool box combination in a new 2008 RAM 3500 and would like feedback on what is available that works well with a fifth wheel and bed cover. :)

Thanks

You bed cover may hurt you in filling the aux tank if it can't be removed easily. I have a 66 gallon tank in the bed. I have a switch to pump fuel from it into the oem tank. Have a filter to filter it before it get's there. It is not gravity feed but the only draw back is if I forget to cut it off it will run fuel down the side of the truck. So far I have been lucky and no problems. After about 105-110 minutes I know the 66 gallons is gone and when the oem gets low I need to get fuel. I have ran 2100 miles without having to stop for fuel. I do not have a gauge on the aux. tank. Mine does not interfere with the 5er hitch! Hope this helps.

I'm doing the same as Okie-Go, we have home made tanks that are around 120 gal... we go out one of the plastic plugs in the front of the bed and go down to a one-way-valve, pump, and filter assembly... . in the cab we flip a switch and pump fuel into the main tank... .

We stop at card locks and fill the main tank from the drivers side and run the second hose into the big tank in the bed from the passenger side... . the bottom of the tank is slanted so we use it down to about 1 gallon or so... .

Our fuel economy is 11-13 mpg because of the weight we pull... up to 20K lbs of trailer weight... .

We've had the same over filling problem as Okie as well... . we've gone to radio shack and picked up a flashing red diode which we have on the dash that flashes when the pump is on... . I'm using Holley Red Pumps, and when the filter is new this process only takes 15 min or so... .

To keep the fuel from flowing from gravity, we've installed a 1/2 lb back check valve so that the pump has to push this valve open when it starts... .

Hope this helps.

I have a 50 gal tank in the bed. It is gravity feed through a 2mmic filter and then into the factory vent as I have the vent mod from spooled up. I have never had a issue with fuel running down the side of the truck. It just keeps the oem tank full and when the gauge starts to move I know that the aux is empty. I can get about 1400 mi from a fill up and sure helps when I find some cheaper fuel. Just my . 02 worth.

There are numerous tank configurations out ther, as well as toolbox/tank combos. Probably need to measure what room you have and compare that to the tanks.

I have a fuel cell in a crossover tool box... I start the feed with a pump, then allow it to gravity feed.

I use an 120 gal Propane tank, I have a draw tube in it, COV and PSI Gauge and it goes to a 4 mic filter, 15' Diesel Hose then to an Auto shut off nozzle, just like the ones at the pumps. I use an air compresser at home or stop at a gas station and pump it up to 30 to 50 psi, fill up my truck anywhere I want to and it shuts off when it is full (click) done. The tank is built for 300 + PSI and the relife valve will pop off the air on top inside if it goes to 250 psi. I put it in the back when I need to drive far far away. Yes it takes up 1/2 of the 8' bed room, I can close my cover on the back and no one knows it is there. I am working on other sizes too. Last summer in NC, FULL under a black cover No PSI build up, I kept 35 psi in it. and I think it was at 85 or 90 that day. It will take a lot more abuse then the 35 gal tank on the under side of my truck. Yes I straped it down with 2" HD 10,000 LBS straps. better then the two 120 gal ALUM tanks on the sides of my 18 wheeler I drive.

Thanks Guys,

Since I travel across USA I will want to go to something that is approved. Thanks for the input. Will be searching the adds.

I have a RDS tank (60 gal) purchased from Northern tool. I went with a electric shut off valve that is tied with an electric fuel pump that pumps into the overflow line of the main tank. All fuel is filtered before it gets to the shutoff valve. So far 23000 miles it has worked great.

Guys that have an over fill problem with an aux. tank - - just subsitiute a spring timer switch in the system - - just repace the toggle with it. I wind it to about 10 minutes on a fifteen minuit switch and don't worry about my memory. (It was the 3rd thing to go)

The switch is available at any good hardware store or Home Depot and Lowes cost is about 12/15 $

See my sig for my Trax fuel tank & tool box combo.

Works great! Already in truck when I bought it. Dunno if I could have afforded to buy it otherwise. But it is neat.

Digital readout under the dash shows fuel in both tanks.

Just installed a 92 gallon tank (RDS) from norther tool, also used their diesel install kit..... it was so simple I couldn't believe it, had to have a friend over to tell me it was that easy. Just fill and forget it, it gravity flows into the main tank and doesn't overflow..... amazing filtering from existing system, I could add another if I wanted, but why.

I have the same basic set up as puller, been using it for at least 3 years on the "01 and it will soon be going on the "08. It allows the use of the rolling tonneau (Agricover) from Genos. My set up uses an electric solenoid switch from a Ford dual tank set up, a small Purolator in line pump, and a small filter, pumps through the filler pipe and take a vent off the existing tank vent and connect it to the auxillary tank so the air exchanges from one tank to the other as the fuel moves. I had used a similar setup before on this and a previous 2500, except the tank was too tall for the tonneua cover.

while i haven't quite addressed the idea of a bedcover as yet,i have the same setup as Larry, and it should prove to work well on the '08... tom

Fuelflow is the best, ihave had 2 toolbox and fuel tanks. I have worked on pipelines all over the usa and never had trouble with leaks are bad wield. You get what you pay for.
