Transmission swap, '90 727 -> '94 NV4500????

Guys,

I have been looking for an overdrive unit for my 89 D250 ('Ol Blue). I thought I wanted a GV unit but... .

1) won't hold back in high range.
2) Reverse on the unit is weak (operated by clutch packs).
3) Not recommended fro high hp diesel applications

So... ... thought I'd go with US gear unit. I don't like how it shifts... ... winds up a spring and "slaps" into gear.

1) They don't offer them for the Getrag 2wd. They did suggest that I may rebuild my transmission as a 4x4 (new output shaft &tailshaft) or replace it with a NV4500. That's kinda dumb, why would I want to buy a new transmission just so I could put there unit behind it.

Can any of you help me????

Don,
If you had a 4x4 I'd drive down and swap you for my front and rear 3. 07's. Going to 36x9. 50 Buckshots for ground clearance and it already backs up to fast.

Big Don, I don't know where you got your information about the GV unit. I have had mine in my truck for 4 years now and I tow a 10,000 lb fifthwheel and have had no problems. I feel that it is an excellent unit. I don't know what you mean as the #1 complaint, but as for backing they only recommend you turn it off when backing a heavy load in soft ground. It is rated to tolerate 30,000 lbs of load. I wouldn't own a early Dodge truck without one. They also use the GV in Bonneville race cars that have a whole lot more poop than your truck will ever have.
Now you know what I think.

Don, my bud has a GV in a bombed 96 with a 5 speed. He bought the 4. 10's and realized he made a mistake. He also went to taller tires. He pulls a loaded 44' pace bigfoot with living quarters that, race car and all, weighs 25,500 with the truck included. He puts his foot on the floor. He has 65K on the rig and has had no problems for far

Okay,

now we're getting somewhere. Do you have any troubles with backing a heavy load with the Gv units????
This is my first choice, but I have been discouraged by several folks.

thanks
Don

Find yourself a used Fuller 9 speed. I'm sure it will fit in there some way. I actually want to try this someday for my truck.

Don, I will have to ask my buddy about backing. He is a pretty good driver for a non-trucker. He did have a unigue way of learning to drive a truck. He drove trucks in Veitnam. He said it is real easy to learn that you never stop your truck because someone might be shooting at you!

Don, i just talked to my bud and he said that the unit automatically locks out below 25 mph so he is not sure want you mean about the reverse gear stuff. He has had no trouble in 70,000 miles of towing a big load. Mark
