Need to haul a Horse, any local haulers?

Trailer brake evaluation

Mine went in yesterday. My 3500 C+C showed up with the stupid 22 gallon tank so the dealer bought and installed the 45 gallon tank from Northern, which was perfectly fine with me. This was cheaper for them than getting the 52 gallon factory tank and I end up with more capacity, win-win. The gravity feed fills the tank at least twice as fast as I sucked it out at <10mpg comsumption. No issue there.

I occassionally drive a Ford that gets 7mpg and that one also has a Northern tank. that one will keep up, but it won't pull ahead too fast. It also leaks. It didn't for the first year, but this last winter it would not stop on it's own. Flipping the valve is much easier than filling up 2-3 times per day.

A few more thoughts.

I did a custom in bed tank, 2 x 1 x 4' = 60 US gals.

I control the flow through a 12v selenoid valve from Napa and a lighted switch all plumbed through 3/8 fuel line.

I installed an in-line plastic fuel filter before the selenoid valve as it closed and slow leaked once and I had to replace the valve. I think some dirt got caught in the valve while closing.

This did end up overfilling the main tank and it did leak out the top of the main tank, propbably through the rollover valve as somehere mentioned.

With 3/8 line it fills up prety fast when the bed tank is full (45 mins), and still plenty fast enough when less than 1/2 full so that when pulling a trailer it never burns faster than it fills (1 hr + to fill). Three years now and still works well.

I've been running via gravity/siphon for well over a year now... I leave the valve on 24/7... never lose a drop and the main tank is always completely full.

I have over filled the tank once using the pump and it leaked out the rollover valves.

Might be as simple as replacing the rollover valves.

How much are you guys spending on tanks?

I looked at a setup that was $1,100 ... ... ... ... at that rate, it would take 121,000/132,000 miles to pay for it's self. IF, IF, I saved $0. 10 per gallon average. At that rate, it's more convenient for me to haul my 75 gallons of water for the horses.

$75. 00 for a rectangular aluminum side tank off a big truck (160 gal)plus

$70. 00 or so for the NT kit. :)

Got the tank hangers as well for mounting in the bed.

Not really trying to impress people that don't care about me.

Tryed 150 gal round tank, but it blocked out a big part of the back glass.

Rectangluar tank set quite a bit lower, blocking only the bottom 3 or 4 inches of glass.

Went out and checked, actually it blocks glass to the height of the head rests, still no problem for me.

Where'd ya' get the big rig tank from?

Here's what I have

Diesel Install Kit for Auxiliary Diesel Fuel Tank — Fits Ford and Dodge Trucks, Model# 011025 | Auxiliary Fuel Tanks | Northern Tool + Equipment

and

Rectangular Auxiliary Transfer Fuel Tank — 45 Gallon, All Diamond, Model# 72545 | Auxiliary Fuel Tanks | Northern Tool + Equipment

The pic is not the tank I have, but the specs for it are right.

I paid $0 for mine because I somehow ended up with the "22 gallon midship fuel tank". Dealer took care of the goof.

EDIT: I'm thinkin' the tank I posted the link to is not the one I have. Mine came with a fitting on the side at the bottom specifically for the gravity kit. I'll get the # off the tank if anyone needs it.

I spent $900 for the tank on my 03. It is as much for convenience as for cost savings. I figure I save about $0. 20 per gallon on half of my fuel - so an average savings of $0. 10/gal. I use about 750 gal/mo, so it took 12 months to save the tank expense. Been using for 24 months, so I have recouped the cost of the tank + $900 and still have the tank. Unless you are driving a lot of miles in different locations it is probably not worth the expense.
