Is there supposed to be any current drain when the key is off?

Big Stick, again..

I turned the key, herd this strange hiss... . then smoke came out from under the hood, from the left front corner...

The fact that the smoke came out the corner may have just been because the wind was traveling that direction.

My lights work, dome light works... but nothing happens when I turn the key.

WTF just happened here??? _

There are no obviouse burn marks and all fuses look fine. I was looking around at all the wiring for about 20 mins.

Basically anything that runs off of a hot ignition circuit is not working... nothing that should turn on when I turn the key is working.

Is the ignition switch under the hood?

Main fusable link - maybe in the large wire running along the upper firewall - at least I think thats where it was on my '91...

But then again, something would have to be wrong to blow that thing... if it's blow, then what might be the problem?

So all my running lights would still work if that thing was blown?

But then again, all my lights are on a relay.

I had the fusable link wire go while I was driving down the road, everything just about shut down. It was even hard to tell the wire had burned. Turned outI had a small short in a wire going to a conection and the main fusable link went bye-bye. I replaced it with a breaker type set up and have had no more problems. Good Luck

Cool. Well at least now I know where to look!

You guys are awesome!

I just hope something simple blew it... :( ... if it's blown.

I'm just going on memory here - and THAT is getting poorer daily! :)

Something else that can sometimes happen, is poor battery terminal connection - corrosion, etc. , that will allow LOW current flow, but fail when a high drain is placed upon it - can usually check that by turning on running lights, then turn on ignition and hitting the starter - if the running lights go out when the big load is applied, you have a battery related problem...

What's that box under the fender beside the battery? Is it the PCM? Whatever it is, it smells awfull burnt...

I don't know if it's because that's where the smoke went before it exited, or if it's because that was the source of the smoke.

OH DERN!

You DIDN"T let the smoke outta THAT box did ya? :) :) :)

Jeeze I don't remember what box is in that location - sorry... There IS a grid heater control box somewhere in that general area - but that wouldn't cause no-start problems unless it failed and took out the fusble link with it...

I'm thinking that there is a critical fused link gone somewhere.

Finding the broken circuit is the first step, then I need to figure out what caused it to fail.

Chris, do u have a laptop computer setup in your truck lol? or do u park your truck in your bedroom next to the computer? -now that would be cool... . btw, what battery did u get? Bill

awshi**in computer

The PCM is a big$ deal. I hope you didn't. Bout 6 or 7 hundred bucks. And you don't know if the new one will fry as soon as you hook it up.

I am going to change my 92 to manual and do away with every hint of a PCM. I don't think my PCM is any good or I would send it to you.

I had a fried wire on the cable going to the starter. There is a little wire that is taped to the large cable and it roasted. Never did find out why.

Sometimes these trucks make you want to puke. Sort of like trying to love a bi*chy woman.

We give him so much crap about that!

J/K Daniel!

Daniel's a great guy, we've been in correspondence for a while now... I swear we're long lost brothers or something... we think a lot alike!

Why?!? So you can have even more wiring, sensors, and computers to deal with? Screw that!

The proper thought process here is to go older... simple is good when you have to fix it on the side of the road sometime
