Shock Absorbers for Dexter Axles

I'm looking through these parts catalogs and noticed that on the tandem axel packages, one axel comes with electric brakes and the other is and idler axel. Is this normal? Is this for cost savings, or is there another reason not to have all four wheels braking?

Must be a cost issuse, I made sure both of my axles had brakes, 6,000#'s each with 12" brakes, it stops real good! Not much more $$ fer brakes. Also do yourself a faver and get the torsion axles, you can get them in any configuation, maintenance free, simpler install and just few $$ differance between them and the spring crap, and they don't make any rattlin' noise while driving down the bumpy roads. :D

Torsion Axels

That's what I thought. That is exactly what I'm looking for. Where did you get you 6000# torsion axels from? Anyone know which axels are best and where I can get them for the cheapest price?

I got mine from a local supplier, I'll get the Part #'s and spec sheet and e-mail 'em to ya', then you can call the factory and they'll tell you where a dealer in you area is located.

Thanks!

Hey Rob, thanks much for the input. I'll look for that part number in the e-mail. I think I'll go with the 24" as well. :D Oo.

Got it!

Got the specs. Thanks! I see they just change the trailing arm angle to give you your desired ride height. That's the way I'm going to go. :D

Henry,

You might check with the state patrol, a few years ago I was building a trailer and the law then was if one axle had brakes all axles had to have brakes. GEd

Problems with brakes on both axles is more prominent on a flat bad car hauler or a utility trailer. When the trailer is unloaded and you use the brakes, when the front axle stops this causes the axle to be pushed toward the rear of the trailer. This in return causes the equalizer mounts(the parts that connects the front leak to the back leaf) also to be pushed backwards. When this happens the rear axle it lifted in an upward movement. It continues this and has a tendency to try to climb over the front axle. My trailer when empty, has a bad tendency to hop and skip to a stop. If I disconnect the front brakes, it stops normal.
