A dodge friend of mine claimed that dodge now recommends 75-140 gear oil in the axles. It cost twice as much and he bought it under a dodge part number.

Has anyone else heard anything about this change???

Yes, I heard that too and the 140 is for vehicles that do frequent towing. I went with the AMSOIL 75/110. It's a little better than the 90, but not as overkill as the 140. I tow on the weekends basically, and I tow hard. DC is also recommending limited slip additive in the American axles and have it blended into their MOPAR product. THis used to NOT be the case but some owners have experienced chatter where ithe LS additive fixed it!! Hope that helps!

Any documentaion of this????

Just because a "Dodge dealer says" I'm not going to run out and drop my differential oil and put a non recommended lubricant in there. In my owners manual, as well as my 03 service manual, it says not to use anything but 75-90 synthetic oil in the AAM axles. I've seen no TSB or anything else in writing that says to use the 75-140 synthetic oil in the AAM axles. The old Dana axles, it's specified, the AAM axles; not an approved lubricant. I monitor the temperature in all my gear boxes except the front differential, and I'd be more worried about the NV 5600 than the rear differential. It runs 200 -220 F towing at 65-70 MPH. Rear differential 150-175 not towing and 185-200 towing again 65-70 MPH. Just my . 02. Ken Irwin

I basically have the same attitude as Ken. I checked the TSB lists over at Fritz's site, and came up empty handed.

The "chattering" limited slip problem has never made a lick of sense to me. There are no clutch packs in the differential to be chattering. Can pinion brake shoes really chatter?

I've always used Mobile 1 in the 90W variety ... ... ... . until about 100,000 miles, then I switched to the 140W variety.

I did experience rear end chatter once. Over the winter, I got lazy and had my mechanic dude do all the fluids for me. He used a commercial 140W synthetic that he uses in the big trucks, and I got chatter. I don't even remember the brand, but I know that he is no skimp on fluids. I changed back to Mobile 1 and the chatter went away.

I used Amsoil 75-140 in both my '03 work trucks. I put 100k on the dually, towing at or above the GCVWR most of the time. For what its worth, it never seemed to hurt. The QC went 77k in my care with no problems either. Those were work hard everyday trucks though. Since then, with my others I have stuck with 75-90.
