Axle whine when cornering / cold

The last few days it has been fairly cold here, like 10 degrees as the high.

I have noticed a slight whine sound when I go around corners in my '05 Ram 3500. I am not sure, but I think it may be comming from the rear axle with the Limited Slip Diff?



Is this normal?

Anyone else notice this sound?

Both of my 06s have the limited slip, and it gets pretty cold here in MT. I haven't heard any noise coming from either rear end. One has 5,300 miles on it and the other has just over 15,000.

My 04 had the "hooter" occasionally on cold mornings. Didn't start until about 20K and wasn't a constant noise. Typically only when cold and moving at low speeds, e. g. 5-25mph. However, this wasn't associated with cornering.



I had the rear rear shaft ujoint replaced because it was shot. Didn't take of the hooter though. At 36K I took the truck to the dealer because I thought the hooter was probably the rear shaft carrier assembly and warrenty was almost done. they replaced the front rear shaft ujoint. Don't know if that fixed it because it was summer time and I traded for the 97 before winter came.



Bottomline is the 3Gens (possibly earlier years?) are prone to premature ujoint, and ball joint, failure. Some folks have had to shim the carrier for vib fixes. So it is possible you are having a ujoint or carrier noise.

It is not very loud, can barley hear it, but it seems to only do it when I go around a corner when it's really cold. Have about 22,000 miles on the truck.

I will probbably check/replace the rear axle fluid and see if that helps.

I don't know about the 3rd gens but on the 2nd gens when it's cold and the power steering fluid is old (or it's just VERY VERY cold) the power steering pump will grown. Changing the fluid out with Valvoline synthetic PS fluid will make it go away. I have to change mine every couple of years and I'm due right now. It was 5 degrees the other day and the truck was groaning bad.
