problem solved, but a caution to every one

transformer oil!!

Lately i have been listening carefully to the way different diesels sounds as i am out and about. I never had any idea the B 5. 9 was in so many different vehicles. I hear buses, fex ex trucks, case backhoe's, ford medium dutys, step vans all with the distinctive cummins sound. This engine seems to me to be the small block chevy of diesel engines. Listen around you will notice alot of little 5. 9's rumbling around town in about every kind of vehicle you can imagine. My question is this. What diesel engine is been produced most in the world. If it is not the 5. 9 how does it compare in production. a quote by someone else "one man's noise is another man's music"

Steve

Steve, dont forget the other applications for the Killer B... . pumps, generators, boats, heavy equipment and farm machinery!
A buddy is a boat captain and used to tend a 97ft yacht with two V12 MTU's (6 turbos each!) and this boat had 2 5. 9's as gen sets!

The little Yanmars have been used very extensively... I even saw one in a John Deere tractor once. I have no idea if it was stock or not (I'm assuming it was) but it just struck me as being so strange that a Japanese diesel would be in an American icon like John Deere.

Vaman,
Sorry to let this one fly, that American Icon now has the jappies making it's compact tractors #ad

Don't forget the 5. 9's little Bro the 4BT3. 9. I bet most of those step vans you hear with the Cummins sound are 4BTs rather than 6BTs.

I need to get a pic of the AF's MEP-12 genset. It has a V12 Cummins (I think it's a 12CTA, but not sure) with twin turbos! Talk about music when that puppy fires off #ad

Cummins lists a quad turbo option #ad
#ad
on that engine in their service manuals, but I have NO idea what applications they're used in.

Later,
Joe

Vaman, sorry to break your heart more, the 30 hp and less JDs are built by Yanmar in Japan. The 30- 100 are built in Germany, some of the orchard models are now built in Italy. The big boys are still made in the USA though.

with cummins suppositly in financial trouble i find it hard to believe. I know they may not have the biggest marketshare in the big rig area but that market has changed in recent years and stress economy hence detroit becoming the leader there. I think cummins had the meduim duty diesel engine market cornered, with the b 5. 9 and let us not forget about the C 8. 3 which most feel is much better than the CAT 3126 I also think cummins has a very large market share when it comes to gensets

Tell me about it, I bought a JD 970 new back in '94 w/ the 4 cylinder diesel, I purposely stayed away from the Kubotas so I could say I bought American... guess what when I got it home I saw the Yanmar engine tag, funny how the dealer forgot to mention that. Regardless it has been a great engine, no probs easy starting in winter. I was told at the time JD, Kubota, Ford, and Case/IH all ran Yanmars in their compact tractors.

Have to give credit where credit is due and the little Yanmars have an outstanding track record. As far as the John Deere issue... have you ever seen something and just kind of refused to believe it? I saw that Yanmar in that tractor several years ago and until yesterday I had still just thought... nah, couldn't happen.

Cummins main (only?) engine REbuilding facility is in Mexico, they have many engine and engine control building facilities in other countries besides the USA. Good or bad, there is precious little remaining for our selection that is PURELY "Made in the USA"... So what's the difference between buying a Cummins engine built in the far East, or a A Yanmar? Check out this pointer to see where Cummins stuff is built:

In regards to the John Deere issue, I heard that they are shutting down their German plant, and moving that production back to Waterloo, IA. They are making a huge investment in Waterloo over the next several years. I'd still much rather have the Cummins in the Case-IH than green paint, but it is an old prejudice. Ray

You can buy a Yanmar tractor exactly the same as a JD, only difference will be the green paint and the price. They are great little tractors, my neighbor has several, knowing the way he operates I doubt if the oil has been changed in ten years, they keep on going.

MGM, my larger JDs say made in Germany on them, but I've noticed a lot of parts say made in France. In fact when I had to replace a lift pump awhile back the parts guy asked if the old one was German or French.

Cummins is the world's largest builder of diesel engines over 200 HP. Yes, there are small japanese and german diesels that are built in large numbers, but nobody beats Cummins for sheer number of engines over 200HP.

According to the cummins website they are the largest producer of diesel engines over 50HP. Just an FYI. Saw a lot mule(tug whatever you want to call it) with a 5. 9 in it the other day. Its been parked for a while and I asked what was wrong with it... Dead Allison lol. I bet that poor truck has not seen over 20MPH except when it was originaly driven to the yard.

When my brother was still a JD service manger, he was told of the Germany assy deal. Originally, it was mostly US parts shipped to Germany for assembly. JD had to agree to that in order to get the Bosch injection.

Smaller buses will have a range of diesel powerplants including: 4BT3. 9, 6BT5. 9, Powerstroke, Detriot Series 40, etc.

Medium buses mostly stick with Cummins 8. 3 (ISC) and Detriot Series 50.

The larger (articulated) buses will have a blend of engines. The smart ones use the M11.

Now that Daimler-Chrysler controls Detroit Diesel they are putting a big emphasis on dominating the medium duty market.

The next few years will be interesting as emission standards on diesels are enforced. Dang near broke my heart to see that first Series 50 with an EGR. The Garrett variable turbo on the same engine was sure a beauty though!

Cheers;
John E

The Killer Bs I saw were in a offshore power boat back in 79. They were putting out 600hp+ apeice! When they fired off it made your blood thin!
