Best way to improve fuel mileage?????

Just purchased an '06 Quad Cab... would like to improve fuel mileage but don't want to have to worry about engine problems or warranty issues. What is the best way to address fuel economy?????????

All in favor of saving fuel, raise your right foot.

I just take it slow and easy. There are many that want to blow black smoke in my face, but they aren't paying my fuel bill, so I just keep my foot out of it.

Got that right! I set the CC at 55mph and avoid "jack rabbit starts" and get 20mpg (pen and paper) since the truck was new on 75 % highway, 25%country roads. I put a Lund TriFecta cover on as soon as I brought it home. I did notice lowering the rear tires down to 30 psi hurt a little but they wear better because I am always empty unless towing.

Just beware that doing any modifications to your truck could void your warranty, or at the very least cause more hassle from DC than one wants to deal with.

I have owned 2 cummins diesels and the only two things that increased fuel mileage was more miles on the truck and less throttle.

These trucks are renown for seeing an improvement after around 20K.

And that is secondary to driving style adjustments, as previously mentioned.

My 05 gets the following mileage...

I have an 05 4x4 3500 drw with the cummins, 48 RE auto, stock tires, 3:73's. I have a true-flow foam replacement filter, bully dog triple dog set on tow/economy setting, no kitty, stock muffler, and a 3 inch hole cut in the bottom of my stock airbox, Amsoil severe gear in both axles and 15w40 amsoil in the crank case, mm oil and ps cetane boost in the tank, recommended dosage. On a recent trip to Kentucky form the panhandle of florida, I got the following mileage, hand calc, and verified pretty closely by the overhead. 1 person and 200 lbs cargo.

Northbound going 70-72 mph 17 mpg hand calc, overhead 16. 9

southbound going 65 mph for 300 miles about 18. 5 mpg overhead

60 mph for 200 miles 19. 1 mpg overhead.

Wen I refueled I hand calc. and got 16. 1 mpg over 524 miles, but I took 15 min to top off the tank which added about 2. 5 gal over when the pump first kicked back. That would probably yield 17. 5 mpg hand calc if I remove the extra 2. 5 gal. I guess I'm not doing too good. Truck had 24k miles at start of trip.

Reduce your speed to around 60MPH on the freeway and you will see a noticable increase in your MPG. The MPG drops off dramatically above 65MPH. Someone on the forum posted that you should try to keep your boost below 10 and your EGT at or below 600 degrees for the best economy. This is at cruise speed, as you will be above these while taking off from a dead stop. I just completed a 300 mile trip from the Puget Sound (Seattle/Tacoma area) to Spokane WA towing my 11-12K 32' fifth wheel and got right around 12MPG. This is pretty good considering the weight I was pulling, the almost constant headwinds in eastern Washington (seems to be a headwind no matter which way I'm going... :D ) and crossing the mountain pass on the way. I set the cruise control for 62MPH and let her go... ;)

My vote also goes for slowing down. I decided to do that on this last tank & the overhead is showing 18. 7. Now I know that's not the true mileage. I'm going to put pencil to paper after this tank like I always do. The overhead before averaged 17. 4 with actual mileage coming out to 16. 3 +/-. My dad has an '01 2wd & he gets 19 MPG. That's driving 50MPH (Country Driving). I'm really having a tough time driving 60 MPH but the results are convincing.

Oh Yeah.

The truck I'm driving now is an 04. 5 Laramie, 4x4, Auto, LWB, Quad Cab, 3. 73 Gears.

My 06 Is doing very good for new

I have been driving holding the speed to 60 on the Interstate being pass by everyone but the MPG Is climing up to 18. 3 and always getting better. The truck only has 500 miles on It. I got the automatic this time and love It so far. The Jake brake Is a toy my wife says but I need something to play with. Ordered a camper top top a Leer not cheap by no means. Hope to get 20 someday? Never know? :D

agree with under 2k rpm its easy to do even at take off. keep stock wheels,a clean truck wax,the amount of weight you carry in the truck tolls, etc. the best in my 03 3/4ton 4x4 has been 20 mpg on trip to texas(carring 5 people and all our stuff). the best in my 90 3/4 ton 4x4 is 22mpg

Well

Filled up last night. The overhead said 18. 4. The pen and paper said 17. 9. That's with a mixture of highway & city driving. I'll take the added 1. 6mpg. I still like driving faster but I truthfully haven't noticed the additional "Road Time". Added Power Service to this tankfull to see what effect it will have on it.
