SPS62 Leaking Oil!

I installed a new MBRP 5" exhaust on Friday, on Saturday while driving around I noticed puffs of blue smoke streaming out of my exhaust after setting at stop lights and driving up my driveway. When I got home my tailpipe was coated with oil on the inside.

I started a different post asking if it could be residue from the new MBRP system. Several members responded and I want to thank them for that, WCounts recommended that I check my turbo return oil line, to make sure it was not obstructed. When I went to do that I found oil all over the oil return line and the turbo is leaking between the turbine wheel housing and the exhaust flange.

This is really disappointing ,as the turbo has only 1000 miles on it at the most since I installed it. I will be speaking with Industrial Injection in the morning, and will get to see first hand if their customer service lives up to it's hype. they appeared very informative and helpful when I purchased it so I have no reason to believe they will not take care of me now. I will let you know!

This time I will remove the exhaust manifold and turbo as a unit, it has to be easier. Are there any surprises I should be aware of, such as manifold studs in the water jacket or similar problems I may encounter? Again, THANKS to all the members who responded, you folks are great! Jess

When I retorque my exhaust manifold, is there a special sequence, or is starting from the center and working outward ok?

Oil outside return line? That's a sign of excessive pressure. Can you blow thru the return hose? (mouth or compressed air) There may not be anyting wrong with turbo, just no place for the oil to go.

Or a cracked/porous turbo body?

Yes, the oil was on the outside of the return line but it is leaking from between the turbine wheel housing and the exhaust flange and dripping down onto the return line. No, I have not tried blowing through the return line but it is almost brand new and I cant imagine it is obstructed with anything as it was fine running to Helena, MT. and back.

This has just started in the last two days, I noticed it right after installing my new MBRP exhaust. The exhaust installed nicely, everything fit really well. I will call Brady in the morning and speak with him before I do anything else.

Thanks for the reply!

Check the oil drain line. If there is ANY restriction it will cause oil to not drain properly and leak out where it is. I had this very same problem with my SPS62. I had to tweak my drain line to try to get it to line up properly with the block, this flattened out the first bend very slightly. Also check to see if the center section is oriented so that the drain is straight down, any angle will cause oil to back up.

Hope this helps

From what your decribing it doesnt sound like your return line.

Since you have a 03 you have a solid steel line and not the newer style flex line. I went through a oil return line nightmare when I installed my new turbo. I ended up buying a newer style 04. 5+ flex return line havent had any problems yet.

My super B had this same leaking it sounds like, you may want to check the endplay on the shaft. Mine had almost . 100" of enplay and the compressor wheel would actually touch the housing in certain places. If it has more than . 005" enplay you might want to contact I. I. they'll clear up any issues you might have.

I spoke with Shane @ II today, He was very concerned about my problem and had me check a few things out and then contacted me later in the day.

He had me make sure the return line was not obstructed or kinked, out of alignment with the nipple coming out of the block or any situation that would create a "trap", also to look for oil in the compressor side and to check for end to end play in the shaft.

The return line is perfect, the "s" pipe I removed from my old turbo has not been damaged and is in a continuous downward slope. It mates almost perfectly with the nipple exiting the block and the connecting hose is clear.

There is no oil visible in the compressor side however there is end to end and vertical/horizontal play. I understand that the vertical/horizontal is expected as the bearings are not floating in oil at rest, but the end to end play should not be present.

Shane took all this information into account, asked me about other performance upgrades I had performed to see if we could possibly account for the probable failure of this charger so we do not continue a pattern of failure. He was very thorough and professional, at the end of our conversation he agreed to send me a new turbo, I will receive it by Friday. Industrial Injection will bill my credit card for the new one and will credit it back when they receive and inspect the returned charger.

I am very pleased with this arrangement, Their CUSTOMER SERVICE is "TOP NOTCH" in my book and at this time I would recommend them to everyone.

Thank You Shane! :) Jess

MRector, the end to end play is minimal and I did not have anything to measure it with. Just as a guess, somewhere between 1/64" to 1/32", I could actually feel it easier than I could see it, but then my eyesight isn't what it used to be.

well it happened!!! took a lil cruise up to colorado this weekend and on the way back, i noticed a pinging and white haze and a burnt oil smell... oh ****. . well i get home and sure enough the turbine blades are contacting the housing and it is leaking oil from between the housings :{ :{ :{ . i love (d) this turbo and have emailed II about my troubles. . wish me luck boys. .

Good luck, though I believe you won't have any troubles out of them, from what I have heard. Sounds just like what mine did to me.
