A little under-powered

What are going transport rates?

My truck has had a B&W Turnover hitch installed, previous owner pulled a six horse trailer (gooseneck) with the truck.

I'm going to pull a 5th wheel with it.

The B&W Companion (18k) looks good and would be very cost effective with my limited budget.

I was looking at a REESE 20k but just don't think I'm going to go that big and think I'll try to stay fully loaded at no more than 18k, less if at all possible.

I'm thinking the Companion will do fine but do plan on off roading more than every now and then.

Will the B&W set-up stand up to the task?

Please share your thoughts,

Cee =)

It's not my choice of fifth wheel hitch but if it came with the truck and appears to be in good shape there is no reason to replace it. It is built by a good company in southeast Kansas that manufactures good products.

Carla,

I wouldn't change anything either if it is in good condition. Use what you got and save your money.

BTW... . love how you sign your name..... that is funny!

I have the B&W Companion - my son has one, my wife's cousin has one, and a good friend has one.

We all pull 'heavy' and have never had a problem.

I wouldn't have anything else.

I have the turnover ball in all my trucks... we'd worn out several of another brand... one of the pop up ones... . The B&W has been great... . we later moved up to a large 5er and added the Companion... My son also has the same set up... we really like them. .

For us its a great choice... hope this helps. .

Thanks to all that wrote!

Yes, the hitch is in good shape and I like the idea of having the gooseneck as well, makes the truck more versatile!

I'll try to post a pic or two of my truck later today.

Again, thanks for chiming in!!... =)

I just sold my 5th wheel camper and let the (4 year old used) companion go for $700. The buyer had the B&W set up and I let him talk me out of it.

Now I've got to find another campanion when I buy another 5ver.

You people pulling massive 5er's with the Companion, do you experience any jerking effect when stopping or pulling away from a dead stop? Almost like something may be loose back there.

I weighed my truck and 5ver on certified CAT scales at 18,300. No problems.

Sometimes the jerking can be attributed to the fifth wheel being mounted too far to the rear and/or weak shocks.

I was an RV Tech for years and pulled several trailers while working there, have been around trailers my entire life, mostly 5ver's and goosenecks. I bought a companion hitch about 3 years ago due to my new truck at the time having a B&W Gooseneck in it. In my opinion it's the smoothest riding hitch I have ever had or used. It's a little more difficult to remove and re-install but got the smooth bed after removal. I would highly Gooseneck this hitch to anyone who has a B&W or wants to use a B&W.

Here is my B&W setup. I once pulled for a transporter company who required at least a 20K rated 5ver hitch, when he saw my B&W setup his words were "no problem, that setup is under rated, it can pull a lot more than 20K". If any one doesn't like there B&W hitch, I'll buy it for my 2500, and save me some money.

I transported RVs for 2. 5 years with my B&W. It worked perfectly! I really like the positive jaw design as compared to some other cheaper types with the slide bar. They hold the trailer tight and don't wear out or wear a spot on the trailer pin. Another big selling port for me was the clean bed floor when removed.
