the only problem i see with using the b-1 is that the exhaust is housing might be to small to feed the big turbo. my little hx-35 uses a 18cm housing vs the b-1's 12cm.

Cumminsntstrokin, :) There is a key difference between the [CENSORED] on your [CENSORED] and the [CENSORED] on mine/B1.

FYI. There are Exhaust housings available for the B-1 that you can feed a HX35 thru... ;) :D

Sizes the Current B-1 housings are:

KSB-1 (Auto/KwikSpool) Average 300/325 Egt drop = 12cm2

B-1 Average 400 Deg Egt drop = 14/16 cm2

(I have housings up to atleast Double this size!)

We are testing others for single and Dual Turbo use.

The problem with trying to compare using the Cm2 from one size/brand of turbo to another is the other variables.....

Turbine Wheel sizes and Nozzle sizes..... I would estimate that the B-1 Housing will offer less restriction then a Hx40 with a 18cm2. Mainly Due to the greater size of the B-1's turbine wheel.

B1 or Twins... .

I have the KS B1 and it rocks... . I bet it would work fine on twins even if you had to change the housing to tune it.

The B1 was meant for towing at high HP and low EGTs. If that's what you want then go for it. If its not enough go to twins later using the B1 as the primary and get a HUGE secondary.

I work with Kurt a lot on such things and twins ARE in my future.

If you start w/a B1 and decide you need a new housing Kurt will work with you.

Kurt, chime in if i'm wrong.

You can bet that if HVAC is gonna try it there IS merit to the endeavor. His twins work great.

Mine will too;)

I don't know about a clear bell housing but a scatter sheild and fir extinguisher might make it safer for everyone involved:D If OSHA , WISHA, SBC, or the local fire dept. lets you enter the pulls again;)

Rob G,

Since you already have an HX40, why don't you sent it up to Piers so he can do his 'Super' modification to it. His '40 kicks in at 1600rpm so there's virtually no lag, and it is smooth and fast through the whole rpm range. Best of all, with his oiling modifications, no one has been able to blow one up (and we've been trying).

B-1 in a twin situation is in work as we speak, no names here! Just wait and see... . I am! There is allot of info that will come out in time, wait and see! In 5-6 Months everything will change... ... Just say thanks to those that are working in the shops as we speak and are spending THERE money to make it work,we love you guys with the knowledge and the workmanship!

Mike:

I didn't know Piers was massing 40's. I'll have to find out what it'll cost.

Otherwise, my new plan is to replace my DD3's with DD1's or 275's, and put the HX-35 back on and leave it like that. I don't drive the truck anymore unless I absolutely have to (I now officially hate the thing and will trade it as soon as something else comes out that's comparable to an F450 without there being a "Ford" badge on it), and with an automatic that'll last, so I just want it to run decently for towing/heavy carrying duties. Thing is, I figure I have at least two years before anything decent hits the market. *sigh*

Rob

Hate it??

Rob, after reading your signature, and looking at all you have done with your truck why do you HATE it [offically] now?

Greg L

Okay, you asked...

Driving this thing is painful to say the least. First, it rides like absolute hell. The rear suspension is so stiff that it beats you to death. Put my 600 lb. ATV back there and it actually rides pretty darn nice. But put my 4500 lb. camper back there and, with the Ranchos set on 5 (required to make it handle decently), it again beats you to death.

Driving it smoothly is absolutely impossible due to the surging problem and the fact that the throttle is VERY twitchy. I realized recently that it's worse when letting off the throttle as opposed to getting on it. The problem compounds itself because when the thing surges, the truck shakes, and your foot can't help but move on the pedal, causing the surging to be even worse.

The thing shifts like crap. I suppose I'll always be spoiled by the B&M Ripper in my Z28. It's just hard to get in gear all the time... it feels like I'm trying to insert something metal into something rubber, and the rubber has to mush in and finally POP it goes in (it's always been like this, even with the stock clutch and the two full-ferrite SBC clutches after that).

The thing has NO low end whatsoever. That's why I started this thread in the first place. EVERYTHING (including 3-cyl Geo Metros) can beat me off the line because of it. I think the only way that MIGHT change is if I rev the **** out of it and drop the clutch, but I don't want to do that to the SBC clutch in it since it's not the full ferrite version. Anyway, there's no power at all until 2000 RPM.

So there ya have it.

A Truck is a Truck

Rob, sorry to hear about your truck dislikes. Unfortuantely some of them are virtually built in and may not be 'bombable'.

I'm gona try to be a 'truck counselor' here:

First, it's a truck, it is designed to carry a heavy load. So it is going to be rough riding SOB when empty. It should and does ride good with a light load, so put a light load in it most of the time, a stack of plywood or drywall under cover should do the job. Or a 4'x8' sheet of steel! [extra heavy-duty bed floor protector!]

When you put your camper in the bed, it sounds like it is down on the overloads, take a look and see if it may have too little suspension travel remaining, and is hitting the stops. I doubt it, but it is possible.

I'm green with envy over your 19. 5" wheels, must look great, but I'm sure they are contributing to the rough ride too. I'd run them at as low a pressure as you can when unloaded, or else they will shake your fillings loose. They also are designed [I'm pretty sure] to carry a much higher weight than they are carrying on your truck.

For the transmission, I think some CTD owners have found a different trans lubricant that helps with the shifter feel. A synthetic motor oil I think.

Now, for the real problem: Turbo Lag! I'd take that HX-40 off and either sell it, or send it to one of the turbo gurus to get it modified for better spooling. Put the HX35 back on, and drive the truck. Driving a stick with big time lag IS enough to make you HATE your truck.

You may have higher egt's with the smaller turbo, but just turn down your fueling box. In fact I think your twitchy throttle is from the box being turned up too high. You'll probably like driving your truck with less maximum power, but with more driveablity.

I have BD3's, and a Piers 'Nasty Nine' turbo, and Edge Comp box, [not the HOT box yet]. My turbo is a Piers-modified HY35, and is very small, and fast spooling. And yes I can see temps above the recommended max, but NEVER when just tooling around with the box set on the lower levels. I have to have the box turned up and hammering it to get high egt's. Off the line boost is very fast, and smoke is there, but not too bad.

I know you are at higher elevation than me, and this will have some effect on egt and smoke, but you don't have to live with that awfull lag. a bit more tuning and swapping of parts should make your rig drivable again.

I'd be in severe depression if I hated my truck! Just check with Steve StLaurent aka: Minivan Man, or Soccer Mom, he's really bummed to be driving a gasser grocery-getter [loaner vehicle] instead of his truck!! We should have his trans back in soon.

EDIT: Steve has his truck back as of Midnight sunday night the 19th. He's grinning BIG TIME!!!

Trashcan that HX40 and live with some occasional high temps!! Or cough up the extra bucks and get the 12cm B1 turbo, at least you'll smile again!

Ok, the hour is about up, no payment required, this is a freebee, just report back with a progress report. :D :D :D

P. S. all kidding aside, I hope you find a fix for a few of your truck's ills.
