The seal is too keep the oil from getting out on to the brakes. The manual says to pack the wheel bearings, this is to keep them alive the first few miles after a service. I just pulled my rear brake off my truck, I personally put it together probably 15,000 miles ago with no grease, and oil came running out. I lightly lube the bearings with oil, and install. AFter getting the axle in and all repairs done, the rear diff is either filled or topped off, then I jack up one side of the axle so oil can run down hill into the wheel bearings, then jack up the other side so oil can get to the other bearings. No problems after that.

The rear wheel bearings are lubed by gear oil from the diff.

Why didn't I think of that Michael. Super!

"the nylon will be much less effective holding the nut after its been off a time or two. "

I have used regular locktite and the wedge. NAPA has the nut and it really isn't expensive. You may have to ask for the nut for a ford, it is the same. Never 'upgraded' to the old style but I liked those.

I won't take credit for thinking of it either, an old Indian taught me it, you know, one of those "old Indian tricks" :-laf ... ... . An older fellow mechanic showed me that a while ago.

No problem Jgolden, I myself am proven wrong every day, as I live with the perfect woman... ... ... . I'm glad she doesn't read this forum either!! :D I wonder if DD has been in here lately? She'll probably set us straight! ;)
