Black smoke out of tail pipe. Repair under warranty.

First, the 5 year/100,000 warranty begins at the time of delivery to the Dealer and not the date first sold. Our truck had 97,200 miles and 4 years 11 months and 1 week of warranty on it. The truck began smoking clouds of black-grey smoke 2 miles from the house. We had it towed to Fireside Dodge during the second week of November 2005 and it's still there. During the first month they diagnosed but couldn't find an answer. I wanted the truck back for Christmas vacation and the dealer "suggested" that the truck would be done buy the 20th of December, even if a new engine had to be installed. It never happened :( . Near the end of December they begain talking about a cracked head at the #5 cylinder next to the valve. The new head came from Texas. After arriving the mechanic damaged the head gasket that needed to be ordered. On the Tenth of January the dealer gave us a rental. On the thirteenth I went to the dealer and the service writer said it was all put back together and running but still smoking probably due to oil in the catalytic converter which would need to be cleared up by idling the engine. My patience is wearing thin  . Any suggestions? Does anyone know what the repair warranty would be on something like this?

Not sure about your question - but I would not accept it from the dealer until the reason you brought it back to them was corrected - "under warranty". Furthermore, "if" the smoke was due to oil in the cat (BS - MHO) have them remove it and there shouldn't be any smoke. Right? Sounds like a fishing story to me. If they remove the cat (unlikely) to check their "theory" it needs to be done in your presence. From now on insist that you are involved with all major decisions. I. E. if the head has to come back off you want to be there to inspect cylinder walls for scoring etc. Sounds to me like they are trying to hide something and pull the wool over your eyes. I "think" once you accept the truck back and it's out of warranty then, as we say on the good ol` TDR, "you are your own warranty station". Don't take this type of treatment out on your Dodge/Cummins truck most dealerships try to take advantage of the customer in these situations - at least the short sighted ones.

You may wish to make friendly with your local Cummins Service Center and ask them their opinion - Bring in any and all dealership documents relating to your recent problem. The Cummins guys are a good deal more friendly than the "Dodge Boys". If you show up early in the am (before the roach coach arrives) with coffee and doughnuts you are sure to get a few educated suggestions. You always get more with honey than with vinegar ;)

Best of luck - keep us posted.

Warranty work how did you get that?????

I was reading the other day on inspection on hydraulic cylinder with small cameras this should be done to see what the inside might look like. Ask them how the oil got out of the engine??? for I have never found any of the do_g_ and cum in shops to be any good . They could NEVER seam to be able to find the, or a, problem. If any work is done do be in there and see what it is that they are doing. Have them remove the exhaust pipe and flush it with ?????? some kind of cleaner. Have them remove the exhaust pipe and put the flex pipe and idle and run it to see if it smokes DON"T SIGN anthing ... If they are tring to put one over on you they make you wait the most lenght of time so that you will..... For I shouldn't think that idleing it would make it hot enough! Today was hitting the bottom of a hill and put it in 4 th and tried to make it up the other side and it laboured toooooo much so had to go up in 3 rd mostly empty.

My 01. 5 stock exhaust did not have a cat, and I'll bet neither does yours. You should have a resonator ahead of the muffler, not a cat.

I 2nd the thought of them putting you over the miles. You know once you pass the 100,000 mile mark they will then find the problem and let you pay the bill. Watch yourself on this one.

Ok to start, the delivery date is just that..... the date the vehicle was delivered to the first registered owner, not delivered to the dealer. Don't worry about any miles put on by the dealer. The miles on the vehicle at the time of write-up are the ones that count. Do not accept the vehicle back till it is fixed. The 01 does not have a cat.

warranty terms

Upon calling the 1-800-992-1997 (chrysler assitance) phone number we were adviced that warranty begins at time of delivery to the dealer.

The repairs they do under warranty, are usually only covered until the warranty expires :(

They pay no extension, you pay what ever the dealer offers. Parts warranty is generaly 12 months,Reman assys 3/36

the warranty starts on the date the vehicle was put into service by you. if you want to be real technical it is the registration date, because you could not have driven it before that.

now if they are telling you that it is now out of warranty once you get it back, do not except it back untill it is perfect. if it is still smoking they did not fix the problem, if it does have a cat and it has oil in it, it needs to be replaced, which warranty should cover as its a direct result of another warrantable failure.

and if you do take the truck back and end up with the same problem it should not matter weather it is still in warranty or not since your origional complaint of the problem was before the warranty had expired. therefore the dealer is responsible for fixing the problem that was not corrected under warranty origionaly. chrysler is a hady company and will back their dealers 100% you have to make sure you have a good dealer. they get paid well for warranty work and if they dont want to do it, then dont ever do buisiness there again.

and yes I do this everyday as a service administrator cor Cummins.

Before you say the dealers get well paid for warranty work you might want to look closer. If you think replacing a short block in an 05 that you have to finish busting the block to get the remnets of a broken cam out to save the gear housing for 15 hrs is good you must not make a decent living your self :-laf

you poor flat rate souls. Move to heavy equipment and GET PAID FOR THE WORK YOU DO!!! Not what some shmuck at the factory can do to a new vehicl thats not broke, dirty, rusted, corroded, or mangled.

As far as i know in this kneck of the woods, a mile is a mile for waranty, no matter who owns the truck. But you 5 years starts at the original owners dlivery. Dads old truck was built in march '94, he got it in september. His 5-year exp'd in SEPTEMBER '99. And since youre in under war. now, this repair MUST be fixed (im pretty shure there is a fed law on this) under waranty no matter how much time or how many miles it takes for them to get it right.
