Kodiak, Have you installed your lights yet?
I'm still waiting for the "Big Brown Truck" to bring mine. I received the door sill protectors on Monday. I called NC today and tracking says they are "In Route". I guess that's UPS speak for "the checks in the mail".

Ed,
I've got mine in hand, but work ganged up on me this week, and I haven't been able to carve out the time. It's definitely going to happen on Saturday, though!

It seems Cruiser Stainless has turned out to be a really conscientious shop. I noticed that the switch on the back that controls light function was a tad stiff and thought this might cause a tendency to slip to the center "off" position. I called them, and they said that there had been a few stiff waterproof boots delivered by their supplier, and they thought they'd caught them all and sent them back. Mine must have slipped through. They had a new boot here the next morning! You might check yours when it gets in; if the switch stays to either side of center, it's a good one; if it wants to go back to center, give Ron a call, and he'll get you a new boot quicktime.

You might still get your on first! Keep me posted.

Thanks,

Dennis

I finally received my lights last night(I guess UPS got lost trying to go from NC to VA). Installed them as soon as I got home from work. Looks like a nice set-up, but could be damaged by an errant trailer tongue.
Also you need to have an extended reach draw bar, as the lights extend approx. 1" past the existing receiver hole. The instructions tell you to drill a new hole in the bar(not with my trailer)so I guess I'll be looking for a longer draw bar. The lights are a heck of alot brighter than the stock '"candles" but I may have to try 100w bulbs just 'cuz more is always better. The wiring is simple red=12v, black=gnd, yellow=back-up light feed (violet/black) in the rear harness. Uses Scotch-locs for connectors. I'll be changing that real soon. In short, good product, looks good, decent price, seems to work well. I'll probably buy one for Wifey's truck next.

I don't meen to put down this set-up at all; but, I've always wired in a set of lights myself. Normally I just use a set of tractor lights up under the bumper somewhere. A $2. 00 relay, a switch on the dash and some wire works just fine and costs a whole lot less. Just tie in a hot lead to the relay and out to the lights. Then wire the relay to come on with the backup lights or the switch on the dash ( great for tailgaters or work lights ).
Anyone useing lights in the 100w range that are around 5"diameter and work out well?? The tractor lights I normally use are a 55w NAPA unit. They work really good, but like someone else said, more is better.

Thanks for the pictures and the info. Those look like a nice light for the back of a truck. Hella has always made a pretty good product. I might just have to look into a set.

Got the White Night unit installed yesterday.

The lights perform as advertised. Throw a good bright pattern wide and low--just what’s needed for backing up. Also the switch that allows the lights to be turned on with the engine off is handy. I unloaded some plants for the wife last night, and with the tailgate down and the box light on, the lit work area was perfect, and the lights didn’t shine in my eyes.

Install went well. The only difficulty came with the optional plug offset. After drilling the tap holes in the stock plug cover, a couple of the supplied screws broke off while installing. Ended up riveting the unit on. The metal of the stock plug cover is pretty tough--you might want to use better screws or go slow.

All-in-all... good product, easy install, and I think worth the money.

Is there enough room to use a locking pin?

Why would you go all the way to the battery to get power. Can't you use the hot wire on the wiring plug?

You can access the hitch pin because the underside of the unit is open. It's a tight fit though.
I wired mine to the 12v+ on the hitch wiring for the initial install, but I'm going to rewire with heaver ga. to the battery and change the bulbs to 100w in the near future.

Ed,

I talked to Rob at Cruiser Stainless yesterday. I was intrigued about your plan to upgrade to 100W bulbs. He said that they had done long-run testing with the 55s with no harm, so he thinks that the 100s will work, especially if you upgrade your wire like you said. IMO, if you run them for extended periods as a worklight, you might want to keep an eye on the unit, though. Lotta heat there!

Cruiser Stainless got their White Night website up today:
http://whitenight.shows.it/

Ed, Rob says after your post about upgunning the bulbs to 100W, he did a test, and they work fine for backing up, but he's a little concerned about leaving them on as a work light for more than about five minutes. Their engineer said the airspace around the bulbs was designed for the 55s. They wanted to keep the unit small. Just beware leaving the unit on and unattended with the 100s!

Kodiak,
I figured that the 100w bulbs would generate alot more heat, but as I mainly use them for backing down my driveway, they won't be on that long. Also plan to mount an on-off switch in the cab, cuz I don't need them during the day. Leave it to us (TDR members) to try to BOMB a back-up light. #ad

Ed, you sure got that last part right! I'm checking into some 100-watters myself! I mean, it's got to be TWICE as good, right?

If it do it, I'm thinking of moving the switch to the cab like you; my main concern is that some kid or malicious passerby in a parking lot could turn it on and leave it. And with the 100s, that could get a bit embarrassing!

Let me know how yours work out.

Dennis

Can one of you post a part number and/or a source for the 100 Watt bulb upgrade you did to the White Night backup systems? I just installed them on mine and the wife's rigs. They're great but more is always better, right?

And along those lines, I searched but can't find a thread where anyone might have done a bulb upgrade to the OEM backup lights. Have any of you seen this either?

Thanks in advance,

JimD

JW,

We talked about it along time ago:rolleyes: but I for one have never had the time to attempt the mod yet.

Dennis (Kodiak) contacted the vendor, and the company was concerned with the higher heat output of the 100w'rs melting the plastic housing.

Anyway..... my stock 55w bulbs are still lighting the way in reverse:D

I've been very pleased with my White Knights and I'd buy another set if needed. ;)

Crank and Chrome

I believe TNN's Crank and Chrome or Horsepower TV showed off this product over the weekend, you might be able to catch a re-run if you are interested in what it looks like. It got my attention :)
