I will start with its a 98 12V, auto, quad cab.

My back up lights flicker on as you pull down on the shifter.

But will not come on while in reverse.

So is there a way to adjust this point of contact?

I have not found it in the Haynes manual yet.

I had my wife try it a couple of times.

The lights flicker on every time, but not while in reverse.

Thanks Gary

The backup light switch is a combo which also includes the neutral switch, it is screwed into the drivers side of the transmission and is not adjustable. bg

I've tried adjusting the shift rod linkage underneath near the driver side firewall and cannot get it adjusted proper. It's like the position of the shift lever on the column and the detents on the transmission no longer match.

The last time I did a transmission fluid change, the plastic wiper arm that is riveted to the metal arm was a tad loose, can't peen it tighter without removing the entire valvebody though. I pulled the switch and it seemed OK. Screwed it in real snug and it worked better for a while and then dropped out again. My reverse lights will work if the shift lever is lifted as if moving to park.

I'm probably going to try another switch anyway, just to eliminate that, otherwise will focus on that wiper arm. Good luck.

My stock back up lites are too weak to see anything. I went to Autozone and bought two 55 watt halogen lamps which I attached to the under side of the rear bumper. Wired these to a separate switch next to the steering column. Nice to have the lights independently switched. Ttoal cost about $25.

Well after trying different things I can get the backup lights to came on if I pull down on the shifter (after it is already in reverse). What my Wife would like is for them to work when she puts it in reverse (without pulling down on the lever). If I can find an adjustment for that it would be great. By the way does anyone have the factory manual? If so does it show a breakdown/adjustment for the lever at the column?

Thanks

The adjustment is made on the lower end of the rod that comes down from the steering column. If it starts ok in park and neutral I doubt that the adjustment is the problem. Might be a worn grommet in the shift mechanism or the arc shaped arm mentioned by icarus33 above. The adjustment is made with the transmission in park. Set the brake and block the wheels before you go under truck to prevent truck from moving in case you shift the transmission out of park. Loosen the swivellock bolt near the lower end of the rod coming down from the steering column. Make sure it is free, push the shift lever on the transmission toward the rear and tighten the bolt. bg
