I cannot get my back up lights to work when I put the gear shifter in reverse. I have checked the fuse, bulbs etc. Where is the switch located for the lights? My truck is a 1995 2500 Ram with the manual shift. Thank You.

1995 2500 xtended cab 5 spd. afe air filter,#8tst plate, timing set 151/2,custom running boards, lighted visor&hood ort. running lgts, xtened mirrows for towing. cd changer, rose wood dash, cummins gear shift knob, chrome acc. knobs, boost ,egt, eng. temp. & fuel pressure gauge.

its on the transmission somewhere, cause its activated by the shifter fork (duh) sorry - got an A/T. When you do find it put a bypass wire across the plug pins and make sure the rear lights up. Then its old switch out, new one in!!

the backup light switch is located at the left (driver) side of the top cover. The switch plunger is operated by the fifth-reverse shift rail. The switch can be replaced with the transmission in, or out of the vechicle. . Apply sealer to the switch threads before installation. Tightening torque for the switch is 192-300 in. lbs.

Get on your back go to drivers' side of trans look up, you see wires and connector to switch. Unhook connector take a 22 mm deep socket and take out switch.

Take some contact cleaner with lubricant and spray ball (move in and out) on switch. Take the same can and spray connectors, then spray connectors with contact cleaner that dries. (You can buy CRC brand contact cleaner at Home Depot).

You can check to see if lights work by taking a solid wire (house wire) and touch the contact pins in side of the connector (key has to be in run position).

You can take switch hook it up to connector and push ball in(key turned to run position). To check to see if switch is working. If it is working unhook connector and put switch back in and put connector on.

I did this and mine is still working.

Thank's Bill that sure answered my question and really good information. I will try the fix you described. The switch is probably a dealer item.

RVnwithRAM, you can get the switch at almost any auto part stores (the auto part stores and my mechanic were quoting over $60 bucks for it) or check out online part houses.

Thank's to everyone who replied to my post. You guys sure helped me out . I took the switch off and checked it out and the switch was bad. I bought a new one at Napa. They sure don't give them away$57. 49 but now I have back up lights once more.

Sorry you couldn't bring your's back to life.

I took mine off two times cleaned out with wd-40 and wire brush the connectors, it would work for two to three months then quit working.

The third time I used the contact cleaner and it has been working since then.

After I put the new switch on and every thing worked I took the old switch apart (just had to see what was bad in the switch) the contacts was burned real bad not making contact.
