The back up lights on my rig are dim. I have difficulty in seeing when backing at night. Have you any suggestions on how to increase the brightness of my back up lights?

cwsoules,

On my old truck, I had a 55 watt Hella 450 clear FOG lamp back there. I mounted it between the bottom of the bumper and above the bolt-on hitch. It couldn't be hit during hookup but it made backing up MUCH more pleasant. #ad

I used some cheap, slim, fog lights and mounted them to the bumper, I used a relay that is triggered by the back up lights so I won't toast the stock micro switch.

Rippin' through the gears with a smile on my face... no more auto for me!

I bought 30 watt bulbs from JC Whitney that go right in the tail light, they work fine for me,although rear fog lamps would be great for tailgaters!

As someone said those backup lights only let the person behind you know that the vehicle is in reverse. I also installed a set of cheap slim clear fog lights under back of the truck with a separate switch (built in light). That way I can turn them on without activating the ignition.

I use docking lights from a boat supply - A pair of 55 watt water resistant halogens, stainless hardware, all the wire and a lighted switch for less than $30 Great for backing up in the dark and quite a message to those high beam flashers. #ad

I installed halogen backup lights in place of the stock bulbs. I also mounted a pair of rubber tractor lights, which really do the job! They are nice when I am hooking up the trailers or when I pull over to check the load. If ya check out the link to my pics, its the second to last one.

I installed two 55 watt halogen foglamps under the bumper of my 2001. I wired them with a 30 amp relay, and switched them 2 ways. They come on when I shift into reverse, and they come on with an auxiliary switch I installed. Just for ****s & giggles I installed an LED pilot light. #ad
Having the auxiliary switch comes in handy for those pesky tailgaters. It's amazing how fast 110 watts of light can make a person rethink their driving habits!

got a $10-20 set of cheapie aux lites (measure abt 1&1/2" x 3") and mounted below rear bumper--main power feed comes from battery thru a brand"F" starter solenoid, tripped by a jumper wire attached to the driver's side backup lite... might get creative and install a "direct" switch for the tailgaters #ad
have been tempted to put a big spotlite on upper lip of campershell, but not yet

I mounted some Hella 530 55w lights ( inset into bumper). It makes a huge difference!!!
I recommend a relay for power source and use the existing backup circuit only for switching the relay.

I bought a set of Navigator backup lights from Camping World (under $30). They come with a real 'cheezy' mounting bracket setup, which I didn't use. Instead, I mounted them by replacing the bottom screws that holds my license plate on with bolts. The lights mount just below the plate and just above the bumper and a highly protected. They are good'n'bright, and do not change the appearance of the truck at all (as in having something hanging from the bumper).

Beartrack,
Did you actually cut the bumper to mount the lights?

I've been working up the guts to do that ever since I saw a fire chief's suburban with a set of gnarly white lights mounted in the rear bumper.

Evan,
In my old truck I added a small piezo buzzer in the headliner to remind me when the rear facing landing lights were on (via that bypass switch you have). Not very expensive, available from Rad Shack and will save you a nice $fine$ if you don't notice the LED and pass a cop with those lights on.

David,
Yes I did cut two big rectangles out of the rear bumper. The truck had about 1500 miles on it!!!! My wife was a little nervous!!! Now she says it looks great. I used a jig saw with bimetal blade and and an air powered cutoff wheel.

Beartrack,

Pictures, please! I was just looking at my bumper last night thinking about sinking some lights in there as well! A guy down the street has a nice front and rear set up on his Suburban. Did you have to rechrome after the surgery?

I mounted a pair of "universal tractor lights" from Tractor Supply at a cost of about $10 per. They are about 3 inches in dia. and rubber/plastic coated. Put them on a separate switch so I could turn them on when hooking up a trailer in the dark and keep the Cummins clacking, which is hard to do with a 5 speed. The stock back-ups on a 4x4 are worthless, and again I couldn't turn them on and keep the engine running while hooking/unhooking, etc. Easy project and well worth it to me.

Scooby,
We are in the process of buying a digital camera now. It is very confusing for us non-computer types!!! If anyone has any suggestions we would appreciate it!!!
I didn't rechrome, I powder coated it a silver-vein color, which looks great with the black truck

I have a set of back-up lights that slip into the open ends of the rear receiver hitch cross tube. They just slip into the tube, you tighten a bolt, and wire it up with a relay and cab switch or use the trucks backup lights as a trigger. They're powder coated with 30 watts each. Blend in great and sure help backing after dark.

I have a 2001 that I mounted a set of xenon work lights off of a John Deere 2000 model 650HT (Dozer) in the rear bumper. These are an option on this piece of equipment so the dealer will have to order them; they are about 2" in diameter and don't require a lot of depth for mounting. The best feature is that they are made to take abuse. I cut holes in my bumper (about 2" dia. ) and mounted them in the bumper (flush mount; run wiring and use a relay and you've got two 105 watt back up lights.
