Backup lights

When I put my truck in park the reverse lights come on and when I put my truck in reverse the lights do not want to come on. This has been going on awhile, because my backup lights used to work depending on how I played with the shifter. But now they don't want to work anymore in reverse they only want to work when I put it in park. Thanks.

Anytime you experience flaky electrical problems 9/10 times it is a problem with a ground. I would check the engine to frame, taillight to frame, and any other ground points that can be located. Clean and bright connections will usually correct this type of problem.

Had an 89 with the same problem... . If I remember correctly, there was a switch in the steering column/gear selector linkage that loosened up and moved so the circuit would be closed when the selector lever was in the park position... . If this is what is causing the problem on your truck, an adjustment of the linkage should fix it.
