Brakes didnt work on freeway while pulling a trailer loaded with furniture and had to make a sudden stop..... (there's no icon for S****** your pants or it would be here. ) I had a hard pedal, and stomped on it four times and no change. So, the fifth time I hit it, I just stood on it and prayed as I watched the front end on the truck fixing to plow into a line of stopped traffic!! Just before I was to hit the lucky car in front of me it, they finally grabbed and almost face planted me in the windshield, like I was riding a bicycle and someone threw a stick in the front wheel to make you flip end over end. It happened once on an exit too, where there was a long line of traffic backed up onto the freeway and had to get on 'em hard. I smelled hot brakes then too. Today, on way home from work, getting off the freeway, I was just making a regular slow down to exit and there was that funny feeling hard pedal again and absolutly NOOO braking power as I pushed harder on the pedal. I let up and tryied again and they worked ok, tried again and they didn't, tried again and almost smashed my mouth on the steering wheel that time so I decided not to try again... . WTF???

can't tell you what your problem is. Only can say my dad had 2 chevy pickups about the same age as yours that did the same thing on him. both went to the shop numerous times under warranty and didn't get fixed. first was traded for the second. The second truck finally wouldn't release the brakes after going to the shop several times for hard pedal and no stop and dad was so mad he pulled it down in low and drove it to the dealer (about 25 miles) with the brakes smoking. He said it was boiling water when he got there. He traded that P. O. S. for the one he has now and its been ok. they had the one truck for 30 days trying to fix it. Dad has driven accident free a couple million miles in 50 years and when he goes right through a stoplight with a hard pedal it does not make him happy. Just can't get him away from the chevies even though he keeps saying "man what a truck" when ever he drives my Dodge:D

Sounds to me like your Brake Booster isn't working properly. For whatever reason it's not producing pressure to help you apply the brakes. I'm not very familiar with the system on the newer trucks. I hope this leads you in the right direction.

I agree on the brake booster, maybe the master cylinder. Is your vacuum pump OK? Any leaks?

Brake fluid unusually dirty (coffee colored)?

I wonder if your Hydro Boost cylinder lost it's charge?
