I was poking around under the engine compartment of my new truck and I notice what appears to be the computer mounted to the engine on the drivers side of the engine (near the injector pump). The wire loom doesnt cover the wires completely leaving many of them exposed to the inevitable oil leaks and harsh environment under the hood there. Would the dealer mind if I cover the wires with at least some sort of tape? Why would they mount the computer there anyway?

I would not mess with it, uless you subscribe to the theory "if it ain't broke, fix it till it is". I've never heard of anyone having problems.

Cummin's engines have had the ECM there for many years... its in the same spot on this engine in other applications than the dodge truck... if this had been a problem for them they would have moved it long ago... .

I think all Cummins engines have the ECM in that location. It's pretty much bulletproof. That wiring harness is a Cummins part, NOT a Dodge part, so don't worry about it.

detroit runs their ecm's mounted to the engine, cummins does the same. they have been there on engines as long as they have been electronically controled. . as the engines are designed to be a multi application engine, the ecm on engine makes for a simple sensor wire harness. .

heck, the detroit diesel ddec 3 & 4 ecm's used on the 16v710 emd diesel engines are mounted on the engine too. . and they get covered in oil, fuel, water caustic soda wash, solvent wash, soot... and they pretty rarely fail.

oil doesn't effect the wires much either. . you have exposed wires under your valve cover where the injector harness is under it. .
