Yeah. Our previous socialist government bought some of those natural gas-powered buses and found that they cost 30% more to operate than the diesel and overhead-electric buses in their fleet, and carried 30% fewer passengers. They mothballed all of 'em. Millions were wasted on them. BTW, I believe they are for sale, but they have no takers.

Boy - the link I looked at was http://www.ucsusa.org/vehicles/calif_bus.html and was quite interesting. I laugh at the very first statement "A new diesel transit bus emits 40 times more pollution over its life than the average car. " Question - how many people can the bus hold compared to the car? Assuming that the bus could hold 80 people while the car can hold 4 - that would be 1 bus to 20 cars... . do you think 20 cars put out MORE pollution than 1 bus? These "Unitied Concerned Scientists" are stupid, they only see the smoke that comes out of the bus and think, "Hey, we got to stop that, that bus is putting out more stuff than that car". They start thinking with the environmental brain and the math part of the brain just shutdowns or gets replaced by an environmental math machine. If they had their way, we'd all be walking everywhere and still carrying clubs around, wait, can't carry clubs, that might endanger something.

I guess I'd better calm down, I live in a good state, but with the stupid people in Fed Govt. , they tend to follow CA as an example of what to do for the rest of the country.

Yeap.

Yeap, our local news station had a slow news day and put the hazardous bus story the other night. I was pretty riled by the time it was over. What riled me was the fact there was probably some idiot Mom and Dad out there going to pull there kids off the bus and drive their SUV at 2 MPG to comute their kid back and forth to school now. They said it was only a danger when a large group of busses were idling in one area. What a bunch of idiots. If you had that many gas powered busses in one area idleing, someone would die!

It is OK to protect your children. But some people just kind of take it to an extreme. It is like they are the first ones to ever have kids. I see the little boy down the street on his bike with helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and padded gloves on! Poor kid would have been laughed off my block when I was a kid. Life has to have pain in it. A scraped knee or elbow is part of life. It is a learning process, if you have pain, you tend not to do the same thing again. Give em a bandaid, a kiss on the boo boo and send em back out! Worked for me.

 Schu, I know what you mean! Sometimes I think we'd be better off if the oceans would rise a little.

:D Who said global warming is a bad thing:D

He might have had a mouth guard too! Seriously - there is a commercial that runs during Saturday morning cartoons with a bunch of kid dinosaurs and they talk about how "mouth guards are cool", and that you should wear one when riding your bike, skateboard, running, walking, going to the bathroom (LOL, the last couple are a joke). It's from the American Dental Association. I know that when I was a kid if I had been caught wearing a mouth guard while riding my bike I would have gotten beat up. I can just see a kid coming home all bloody and saying "thanks mom"! I'm absolutely convinced that we won't stop until there's kids walking around in a bubble (remember seeing the movie previews for bubble boy when he gets hit by a car and goes flying) so that they can't possible get hurt. I'm with you CF - these kids are going to grow up and get hurt big time at some point because they will have never learned pain.

Point?

Point is, do you feel safer when you wear a helmet? Maybe safe enough to try something you would not try without one? I wear one when I ride my motorcycle ( I hate it, but have seen a couple of people that had bad wrecks without helmets). It doesen't give me any reassurance, but does give me intercom and radio... ... ... ...

They should also check the number of miles that the average bus drives in a lifetime. . It's easy to exceep the pullutants if a car when you drive 5 times as far.

Most cars only drive a 1-200k in thir lifetime and it takes them 10yrs to do it. Many buses see 500K plus if properly maintained.

And more pollutants that are not the same pollutants... the pollutants are less harmful than gas emissions. I don't remember the mix.

I wear a helmet on my mountain bike when I ride all out or do tricks but I never use it on flat ground or smooth terrain.

I let my kids do things that won't hurt them PERMANENTLY. I think a little pain is god for them. Makes 'em tougher.

I don't think these self-proclaimed environmental experts deserve any credibility. They print up commentaries on these so-called studies but I don't see them citing any sources or actually showing the original studies.

I sent and email and they responded with...

Mr. Kendrick,

You can download the full report, Pollution Report Card, at http://www.ucsusa.org/publications/PollutionRptCard.pdf , which provides the full analysis, numbers, appendices and citations to back up our press release. We are by no means advocating the removal of buses from the road--but the impacts of diesel exhaust on public health in general and children's health in particular is unacceptable when there are cleaner options available.

I haven't read it yet but I will.

I've looked (briefly) through the PDF that they gave you, it's interesting that the web link I provided gave you the impression they were talking about Public tranportation, while the PDF seems to be talking about school children/school buses. Maybe I read it wrong of the web link I gave, but the PDF does mention Transit buses, but majority (at least in the first 1/3) of the report talks about school buses.

My question back to guy that responded to you would be "Why wasn't there a link to the PDF in the one page report?" If they based thier one page report on that PDF, then why not? Media coverage, twist the truth and make it sound bad so you can get the Federal goverenment to do more for you or make americans think things are worse than they really are. Sorry, keep the Federal Goverentment out of it and do what you want in YOUR state, don't make the whole country pay for your "Ideas" to reduce pollution.

It make me mad that the "scientists" think they know what causes global warming in just the short amount of 5-10 years. Why wasn't I aware of Global warming when I was 10 years old? Cause they didn't know what it is. It's just funny that they say it's due to pollution when only God would really know. It could be due to all the cows in the world having gas... . it could be the result of earthquakes... it could be the result of volcanoes spilling out gases and such... face it, they don't know what causes it and are using it to get their way to reduce the amount of diesel that is used.

I know I read they linked cancer to Diesel fumes and such... I'd like to see a study done with gas too. Report that and see what it is like. I'm sure there are things in diesel that are not good and same for gas, but HEY, Diesel smells so much nicer!!

Well, enough, I'm getting off the soap box, NEXT!!

One of the reasons you hadn't heard about global warming when you were 10 was bacause there wasn't any $$$$ in it at that time! Remember those days - the days when you did something wrong - IT WAS YOUR FAULT!

I heard.

I heard about Global warming back when I was ten. I am in my fiftys now. I have looked at many of the scientific studys done. Most of them agree on one point, that global warming is caused by a combination of things, NOT just automobile polutants! Some even say that this is a natural cycle of warming that happens every hundred thousand years or so. There are many conclusions. We as Americans are much more materialistic than the rest of the world. And we love our cars, trucks, and general internal combustion toys. Some day we will all be driving electric or small diesels, its coming. Maybe not in our lifetime, but its coming! Once the price of oil goes to $5. 00 a gallon, we will all be looking for a different ride... ..... It sucks, but its true...

You notice where a lot of the people are from that are worried the most from global warming? California, look out the water is rising!!!!!!!!!

I'm also in my 50s and I remember the "ice age is coming" scare in my teens.

How can they predict what will happen in 50 to 100 yrs. when they can't accurately tell you what the weather will be 2 days from now?

Did I read a couple weeks ago that instead of the antartic(sp. ) melting, its actually getting colder? Do you think the enviornmentalists will now warn us (again) that we are causing the return of the ice age?
