Pot O' Gold

Dan,

Us owners have somehow gotten the impression that there is a big pot of warranty gold somewhere in the skies above Dodgeland. Ain't so folks. Warranty work comes out of your pocket and mine when we go to buy a new truck...

And in the end, warranty work comes out of all of our pockets. There's no magic warranty bank account at Chase Manhattan for DC or the dealers. Labor rates go up because of unapproved local warranty work by the dealer. Truck prices go up because of warranty work paid to the dealers by DC.

Mike

Somehow you figure DC shouldn't abide by the warranty? Don't you think they have the cost of warranty work built into the cost of a vehicle? There is a pot of warranty gold in the skies, and DC can cash in on it if they produce vehicles that don't require warranty work!!

Instead of trying to tie truck prices with warranty work, let's look at the company bottom line if their products are quality. The higher quality you have, the higher the bottom line will be. I've had a couple things go wrong on my truck, and I had my dealer fix them. Why should I be stuck with the bill because poor ole DC didn't account for a percentage of bad parts???

Can you say Bitter? Dude, you are missing the point. A warranty repair for something that broke due to poor quality is way way different than someone that mods their truck and breaks the part.

Higher quality cars should have higher bottom lines? Dream on. First, the consumer will have to be willing to pay for the higher quality part and second, why then did Mercedes post record losses last year? If people are happy to eat crap at McDonalds, why would they pay 4 times more for a well cooked meal?

Its not as easy as you think. Expecially when other countries have significantly lower wage costs, no unions, and are spanking the USA auto makers in overall quality at the same or lower pricing.

Warranty costs are huge and a unpredictible liability to the auto maker. The 2000-2002 Ford focus had 14 recalls alone, in addtion to a high warranty cost.

DC has been coming down pretty hard around here lately. We are required to call in every diesel BEFORE we start to work on it... check for boxes, boost elbows, check the ecm for idle time and est fuel mileage, scan and report every code, even got us checking to see if there "was" velcro on the PDC cover. If they find anything at all, it is at DC's discretion then to put a restriction on the engine or the whole powertrain. If we do not follow exact procdure and contact STAR, the claim will be denied regardless. It is really adding to the frustation for the tech's and the customer's and sure is making the down time longer. But they are not paying if it is Bombed... . even just a little. The Dealer does not giveth, nor taketh away the warranty, only the almighty... . DC

We had a guy come in a few months ago with a blown head gasket and leaking oil pan. Stack through the bed, Comp w/tap, weight bracket/hitch, big charger, traction bars and all. We told him we could probably cover the oil pan leak at the back of the engine, because it was common, but he was on his own for the head gasket. he got mad and left. We saw him again about six weeks later, he took all the stuff off and had it paid for under warranty about an hour north of here. I guess its up to you guys whether you think that is fair or not, seems like opinions vary.

Trust me, we all pay for it when those that have no morals screw the dealership. . One way or the other, its a shared expense.

I see the marketing fairies have imbedded into your brain that a higher cost vehicle is a higher quality vehicle. Just because it's a Mercedes doesn't mean it's higher quality.

I figure since I paid $40,000 for my truck, I should be secure in the knowledge that if something breaks, not of my doing, it will be fixed in accordance with DC's word. What's so bitter about that?

This thread and conversation was started because a dealership weasled out of warranty work NOT caused by modifications... I don't think I'm missing the point at all.

I agree with your last point, and it strengthens my argument. You make use of a crap part, you pay the costs to replace it.
