I recently had engine failure on my 03 the engine is locked up. DC voided the warranty because of a blow off valve, which by the way never worked. I found large shards of metal in the intake where the air goes into the engine. There was no turbo damage or intercooler damage . DC could not tell me what caused this, they just went ahead and voided warranty. There was raw fuel coming out of the tailpipe and knocking real bad when the failure occured. I had the injectors tested and they were ok , but now i have a truck i cant use ,a large monthly payment ,and lack the know how to fix it,and the money. Can anyone give me advise or info to better my situation. Thanks cummins killer

Give us a much info about your truck as possible. Ex. what if any bombs do you have? is this an SO or HO? Were you running the truck hard before it died? towing anything? The more you give us the better we can help

Large shards of metal in the intake where the air goes into the engine? Where did that come from? Only metal between the air filter and the intake is the turbo.

Well i was towing but not enough weight to make any difference,There were no chips installed and when it happened i was coasting. DC tore down the top part of engine removed glow plugs ,injectors valve cover. Everything looks ok to me as far as removal of the valve cover, also no rods are bent. The blow off valve was installed 1. 5 years ago and never worked,it is suppose to be vacumn operated but there was not any vacum to operate it that i could find. It was a mistake putting it on but it also never worked. I tested the engine and it is locked up.

Oh by the way it is an 03 H. O automatic 2500 4x4 . I have had chips in the past such as the TST, edge ez, Volumizer, and 4 inch exhaust. The cummins killer

So you put all this hop-up stuff on an engine you aren't even familiar with and ruined it. What do you expect? I can't see why DC should fix it for you. If they did, we would all help to pay for it when we buy our next Dodge.

If the head is off and everything looks good on the top side then you probably Spun a Main Bearing. Are the metal shavings from when you drilled and taped for the Blow Off Valve.

Troll ????????[/QUOTE all he did was ask for help, not criticism, i would recommend taking it to a cummins dealer, they can determine what the neccesary repairs are and give you a completed price estimate, they can also rebuild or replace the whole enine and give it back to you with warranty on their work and their new parts... ... . , or if you know an expierienced engine builder, have him rebuild it, or have him extra build it so it will be hard to break... . ;)

And its unlike any "large" shards made their way through the intercooler. Nichols, where you at ?

What is a blow off valve? Is that another name being used for something else? Excuse me if that sounds ignorant but it's late and i'm tired and can't think what a blow off valve is.

it relieves excess boost or dumps boost when the throttle is released, also can dump boost between gears to prevent turbo damage from overboosting, or stopping turbo bark..... ;)

I'm very sorry this happened to you, and I think you've just learned a very valuable lesson (and an expensive one, at that!). Let's look at the facts: 1) Dodge won't touch the truck under warranty, 2) Cummins won't honor any warranty, 3) you haven't the financial means to fix the vehicle sans warranty, 4) you haven't the mechanical aptitude to repair it yourself.

Under those circumstances, you are now proud owner of a very expensive doorstop (admittedly, one that can stop a VERY large door!). As I see it you have 2 options: 1) $AVE $AVE $AVE until you have the cash on-hand to repair the vehicle properly, 2) LEARN - by taking the vehicle out of service, dismantling the engine, and repairing it yourself.

Option 2 is quite likely more expensive than option 1, but has the advantage of allowing you to spend money gradually over a LONG period of time rather than trying to shell out a fortune all at once. I agree with others' that if you're going to have it rebuilt have someone like Scheid do it and majorly over-build it while they're at it.

As much as I like the phrase "you're your own warranty station" once the vehicle is modified, I still don't like hearing about people who make a bad choice and get in way over their head. All of you future bombers out there reading this - don't bomb unless you have the cash on-hand to buy yourself a new engine!

I sincerely wish you best of luck with this mess.

very easy and inexpensive install on a gasoline turbo engine. expensive and hard to make work on a diesel [properly anyways. . would need to only actuate when drive pressure drops rapidly below charge pressure]

The shards are more like broke pieces than shavings the largest one is about the size of quarter. The thing is that chrysler is not standing behind there warranty and can't give me an answer on why it happened. The truck was completely stock when the failure happened and was stock for six months ahead. They need to prove that this inoperable blowoff valve caused the problem, and they can't because it didn't!. My location is in G. A. I need a service writer at Dodge that can take care of this under warranty, that can also work around a restriction. DC quoted me $14,000 for a new one. I want DC to warranty their product. What would make the engine spin a main bearing, the blow off valve was welded to the pipe from intercooler to elbow. A blow off valve releives back pressure off the turbo when vehicle changes gears or at certain rpm. Essentially it is a safety feature.

At a minimum they need to tell you what went wrong. The 'oh, there's something I don't recognize that MUST have been what caused this' is nonsense. Call a regional representative to help. It may turn out the damage was done months ago with some of your boxes, then it's up to you to fix it. Until they can tell you what happened, don't let them off the hook.
