It is 27 November 2009, I made it back Tuesday night, no further issues. I promised a run down, start to finish, so here goes.
23 Oct - got 24 gal of fuel at a truck stop (Shell, Pilot, Perkins I70/76 merge Breezewood PA. , yeah - one station has both names/ Shell name and Pilot fuel and different address on receipt than actual address!)
Drove about 250 miles in mountains getting a low of 11. 7 and high of 12. 3, towing 8500lbs, all gauges were well within spec.
Hit off ramp for half way stop, light changed and no pedal response, idled to next light same thing, NO WARNINGS OF ANY KIND, even hit sys check. Idled to parking lot, secured a tow, shut down and restart, DPF FULL showed.
Chrysler tow service had truck sent to a Chrysler ONLY dealer, no Cummins tech on staff. When I found out I had it towed to a Dodge dealer with a Cummins tech.
Monday morn dealer calls and states “bad fuel” not under warranty, $13k est!
USAA said it will be covered/ not covered, I talked to a supervisor stating “I had a contract with Shell to pay for ULSD and they had same to supply me with said fuel” they came back on board and stayed thru the rest of my ordeal.
INS ordered truck to be fixed, Chrysler supplied parts, CP3 pump was bad and pumped 5 gal of fuel into the crank case! Dealer never trouble shot why, just stated eng had internal damage. Ins took 4 days to reply to dealer, ordered compression test. Dealer took a day and a half to complete, 395/400psi all cyl. Service rep found that new CP3 pump was bad and caused fuel to enter crank case.
I asked service manager how much fuel was in the case he said “I don't know I will look into it”. Cummins allows 5% fuel oil dilution, I had 62%. I only know this from the STAR report filed with Chrysler. I asked again in person this time, all he could say was what was done to clean the systems. I asked if there were any exceptions to my warranty, none are in place. They also gave me my truck with only enough fuel to get to the closest station (across the street), nice touch I thought. (Humes in Waterford PA. )
I asked for a historic listing from my ECU, here is what was listed in order under DTC Info.
PCM P1012 Fuel pump delivery pressure too high Active
PCM P1011 Fuel Pump delivery pressure too low Stored
PCM P0087 Fuel rail pressure too low Active
PCM P2229 Water in fuel Active
Not hard to see that the WIF did not do its job, a simple fuel pressure light (change filter) would have given a clue to what was happening.
The total cost for just the bad fuel was $14035. 62 (my ins USAA covered me)
Here is the big stuff.
Fuel level/ Pump $ 245 1 ea
Connecting tubes $110 6 ea
CP3 pump $ 2320 1ea
Injectors $ 1475 6 ea
I close friend of mine has been the Chief Engineer on 5 different ships and has never seen a filter let the “crap” loose and into the down stream side.
I also talked to the techs at RAYCOR they stated water is vary hard to filter on the pressure side of a pump. It works much better on the vacuum side.
I looked into the TSB 14-003-09 and it does not seem to be totally available, dealer can't even get an est on man hours. So I turned to Genos and bought a FASS water and filter set-up. I will be installing it Saturday.
I would like to thank all of you for your support, some of you even offered your time, advice and money. I can't thank you enough for your support.
I would also like to take time to note the folks at TDR, they have been there the entire time talking to me personally and taking care of the unpleasant issue that came up during the postings.
Also the folks at Genos came through when I needed parts to keep this from happening again.
I left names out intentionally as I don't like being singled out for doing what I believe to be the right thing for our fellow man and believe they feel the same.
This is a top notch organization and I am indebted to it.
That said I will enter my contact info on the 911 sight so someday I may start to repay my debt.
