Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Bad fuel sender unit?

My fuel gauge has not worked since I bought my truck a few months ago. The gauge is on empty and the low fuel light stays on. I assume the fuel sender unit is bad. I have read several posts where members are reporting spending in the $50-$80 range from the dealer for the unit. I called the local dealer, and was quoted a price of around $350. Am I asking the wrong question? What part do I need to fix this problem?

The sender is probably fine, it is a poor design that allows the contacts to lose contact with each other. I fixed mine by doing something similiar to CJ's fix, you can find it on the link above. I think I only spent 1 or 2 dollars on parts to fix mine. If you buy a new one you will likely be replacing it again before long.

I think the part you are looking for is listed for earlier year trucks. Just get the Parts Guy to work back in the years I'm sure he will find it (the part is the same). Pulled mine and fixed it just like NHouse and CJ's and it works fine . That was 2 years ago

Sounds like the parts guy priced the entire fuel pickup/sending unit module. You only need the $50esh sending unit. Its about 3"X1. 5" and is attached to the big (app. 5"X15") module with I believe 2 screws.

Fuel sending unit

I replaced mine last night. I can get you the part number when I get home tonight. I bought mine in 12/2002 for $43. Job is not bad. Try to have the tank as close to empty as posible. Toughest part was getting the plastic nut off the top of the pickup module. It finally came off but took two of us twisting on it. I had the one off on my 03 to do the fuel tank vent bomb and it came off easy. Putting it back on is a little tricky too as its a huge nut with a coarse thred that screws onto a plastic tank. Take your time and it will be easy. The dealers sell quite a few fuel pumps for gassers and they are located in the same fuel pickup module so alot of times if the parts guy is not paying close attention thats what he tries to sell you for your diesel hence the $350 price tag. Mopar number for sending unit. . may have superceded. (94-97 trucks)

04797738 fuel sending unit for tank floats 40-60 is the price depending on the dealer and your pricing disc. if any.



It is manufactured by Carter for Mopar and not sold thru Carter aftermarket.



It would physically fit on a 98-02 truck, but guage will not be accurate (100 ohm vs 230 ohm sending unit)
