I think my 97 5sp may have a bad injector and am looking for any information that could help me diagnose the problem. Periodically, it will start smoking like crazy under moderate to heavy throttle and seems to be down on power as well. Boost and EGT seem normal when it is doing this, but I do notice more turbo lag. It will do this for a while, sometimes several hours, then suddenly everything is OK again. It starts on the first revolution every time, even when it has sat idle for several days, and has good fuel pressure to the injector pump (28psi). I have also noticed that since it started doing this, it has a little less power, seems to idle rougher, and the mileage has dropped about 20%. Anyone have any insight?

Problem solved!

Just installed my new BD injectors today and can't believe the difference. They took care of all the problems I've been having and the truck runs better and smoother than it ever has. Apparently I had a bad injector when I bought the truck 40,000 miles ago and didn't even know it.

You can "test" the injectors ny cracking the fuel lines at the injector while the truck is running. Did you do this?

bad injector

I had a similar problem once, turned out timing was off and the return line bypass valve (banjo fitting on fuel pump)was weak not letting fuel pump stay full of fuel, hence the smoke and low power. :D :D :D

No, I didn't test them. After I pulled them out it was pretty apparent there was a problem, though. One of the holes in the #5 injector was almost completely covered over with carbon so apparently it was plugged or something. I figured if nothing else that this was a good excuse to get bigger injectors anyway.

Be aware that the fuel pressure is about 17,000 PSI. Keep safety in mind.
