I just called the local muffler shop and he told me that within the next year, all of Oregon will have the same smog rules as California. That means KEEP YOUR CAT ON YOUR TRUCK! It will be a $2500 or more fine if caught. I have seen nothing that supports this but my guess this is true, as he could have made a few bucks from me making a "test pipe" for my truck. I think ill just pass on this and keep my truck totally STOCK.

High fule prices and now we get to SMOG our rigs! The end of the world is near! :{

As screwed as Cali is, I am not aware of a smog test for diesels here. Perhaps those who have had diesels longer than me (most everyone here) will chime in. I know several people here who have removed their cats (but I don't know their names or any contact information for them whatsoever ;) )

No diesel smog tests here, unless you're reported to 1-800-EXHAUST for blowing a little smoke. Then they'll make you pass an opacity test B-4 letting you renew your reg.

my experience

Her in OR my rcuk has been exempt from DEQ inspections because of it's weight. I just send the reg. slip back to DMV with the 8800lb box checked and no insoection required. Hope that doesn't change.

MA is the same as CA, no smog tests for diesels yet, the ones they let in, we still can't get TDI VWs or CRD Libertys. Just got my inspection a couple weeks ago, they asked the HP and that was it.

I had a muffler shop remove the Cat & put in a Dodge "test pipe" some years ago. The deal was "cash only, no receipt".

Like smd said, things changed. I gutted it & went to have it put back on, I had it in the back of the truck. Went in, asked the guy if he'd come out & ck out what I have in mind.

I pointed to the "performance muffler" in the back of the truck & asked what he'd charge to put it on. I told him I'd like it put on "right about there", cash, no receipt.

He put on that big :D and said "that's illegal" ... I reiterated "cash, no receipt" ... he said $40. :-laf

The fella here didnt come right out and say that diesels were included but all gassers, 73 and newer were going to get the tail pipe enema. He was thinking that the diesels were going to be visual only, just to see that everything was there. this is the same guy that last year tried to get me to let him remove the cat on my Corvette. Now he wont even touch that. I know that Ashland, Medford and the Portland area aleardy have the gasser checks. I guess the liberal tree hugg'n guys finally got to the Governer. At least, we still have NO sales tax and registration is still $25 a year. Great property taxes too, but I guess I should whisper. Anything can change these days! :-{} :{

Used to be in Washoe County (Reno), if you were 8800#, you didn't have to smog. Now you have to be over 10,001# to not smog. Can't believe we beat CA to the punch!

Feds and more

Seems to me the cat is a Federal requirement - and of

course all the States are bound by it.

As already stated - no diesel tests in CA . . . . yet.

At some point they (all the States) will jump on the

bandwagon by checking - and of course a visual check is so

complicated they'll probably only charge about $50 to do it!

Fines are BIG bucks if muffler shops (or you) mess with

any kind of emissions stuff - that's why all the various

exhaust kits (Borla, etc) for gas cars & trucks are "Cat Back".

CA employs "ringers" (drivers with "doctored" emissions cars)

to go to the Smog Test stations and see if they can get passed -

complete with hidden video cameras!

[Bro-in-law had one of those at his shop].

So, maybe they (CA) do the same with muffler shops.

Big Brother is (or will be) watching!

Interesting, my truck did not come with a cat when I bought it new. I did have it tested with permission from ODOT even though I was exempt, when I was testing my TAG for emissions. With or without the TAG I was well within the parameters of what Oregon allows for lighter diesel rigs on the opacity test. With the TAG in place, my emmissions dropped by about 5 points. I'm not too concerned about this. If I want to make smoke, I just dial up the power and if I want to be extra clean I just run her in level 1. ;)

One thing to remember, Cummins is the only engine company if I recall that was able to meet the Federal smog requirements several years ahead of everybody else without modifying the engine. Thats one reason Ford had to move back down on their engine size, because they were have problems with the smog issues as well as other problems. At least that is what I seem to remember. ;)

I think every state should have california emmisions. i don't see why people are against clean air. is has nothing to do with "liberal tree hugging hippes", is has to do with doing the right thing. i can't stand getting behind some stinky ***** caprice or any other car. the north east is suffering because all that crap from the midwest combines with the other smog already here and makes it twice as worse. that is why so many healthy young people are getting asthma. just my . 02

hercules i bet you are in favor for paying extra to register your truck and extra every two years to smog it. I live in College Park and drive interstate 95 quite a bit. I pass many light diesel trucks and never see them smoke. Mine only smokes when I want it too. Now for the big Rigs in a traffic jam doing the stop and go skit plumes like the guys on the movie " Half Baked" I can barely see through some of their black clouds. Ive even had an oily substance on my windsheild from the soot that the rigs put out. Now those smokers should be regulated and not the small independant diesel driver who only commute to get to work. These are the guys making a living poluting the air. I know the EPA tree huggers are tightening the restrictions more on them but us down at the bottom of the barrel are having the most weight put on us. My old hemi had to do the treadmill test where they dyno it for emmisions. That truck not only cost me more to register every two years but more to have an enima stuck up its arse as well. It is nothing more than a way for the state to make revenues. :-{}

Here in Wisconsin, on the counties bordering Lake MIchigan have emissions for the gassers, but you can get around all of that if you just regester your car/truck as kept in a county that doesn't have emission testing :-laf

I've not heard of any reports here where milage has increased after removing the kitty.

I'll be the first to say that I did not see any improvement. I might throw mine back on one of these days... I took it off without damaging it.

The only thing I noticed is that it would smoke BAD if I drove interstate for say couple hundred miles and stomp the pedal... it quit that with the new exhaust. I figured it was the cat not getting hot enought to burn the soot off the catalyst... stomping on it simply coughed all the unburnt stuff out the pipe.

I actually didn't notice ANY increase with changing my entire exhaust... it is getting the same mileage it did before the full flow exhaust... might take the entire thing off.

And PA DOES have a emissions inspection for diesels... it is only visual at this point... I called and asked because I had remove the cat on my 04. 5... luckily their books say 04s :D were not equipped with cats.

What!!! Emisions testing is a bunch of garbage. It has nothing to do with clean air and everything to do with gov't control over YOU and taking more of your MONEY ..... PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!

The air has been clean for years ... its all a bunch of hoooie.
