An odd occurance happened to me the other morning. When starting the truck this morning (31deg. ),I had an extremely loud grinding sound coming from both the brakes and the steering column. As I applied the brakes (Sitting still) it sounded just like a bad power steering pump only louder. if I took my foot off the brake and tried to turn the steering wheel it would make the same sound. What is the connection between the two, and what could possibly be starting to tear up  ? Excellent service since new (2002)

Sounds like you will probably want to check your power steering fluid level.

Being it only makes the nose when you turn the wheel when cold, it leads me to believe it's the P/S Pump making the sound.

Look under the rig and see if the vacuum pump is leaking. Brakes and PS are both driven off that pump. Also, try your in cab vent system. Turn the blower on and switch from blowing air to the windshield, dash or floor. I'm pretty sure that actuator is run by the vacuum pump.

My 2000 used to do this in the cold as well. If no leaks are present, replace the power steering fluid with synthetic. I used vavoline brand and have had no problems now for years.

i also had the same issue when it was cold... the P/S was a little low so i toped it up and everything was fine... . it only did it when it was cold out.

My truck has done this since new, its just the cold causing the PS fluid to be thicker than usual. Change to synthic valvoline if it bothers u. Mine has never been low and never had a leak, just how it is.

It also makes the noise when the brakes are hit as the vacume pump and PS pump are driven off the same drive, so the noise is from the brake booster drawing vacumme from the pump (at least that is how I understand it).

Everything that I have read and/or heard is that this is normal and does not cause damage. Mine usually goes away after about 1 minute.

Hope ths helps,

J-
