I haven't done it (yet) but it looks like to me that it would be fairly easy to try and shift into reverse instead of 5th on theses 6-speeds, especially if the driver was in a hurry. Has anyone had this happen?

Anyone have any idea what sort of bad things could happen to the transmission if this did happen? I assume it would just grind (but what would grind I am not sure, the gears I guess?) and not actually go into reverse, anyone know if this is accurate?

Thanks,

Mike

Well, with a few distractions occupying too much of my time, I did go for reverse instead of 5th. It does make some noise, but I wouldn't worry about slipping into reverse. It would likely take a gorilla to do that!:D

I have no idea about the HO 6 speed, but every other manual transmission I've used has some kind of mechanism to lock out reverse when over a certain speed, I think 5 or 10 mph. Not that I go testing my transmissions for that though! :D

From what I've heard of others experiences, and my own. New owners generaly try for another gear rather than miss. No, it won't go in. Usually after 1 or 2 attempts you learn :).

It is really a problem going from my personal 5sp to the work 6sp. When shifting on instinct and not out for a sunday drive, I have found the reverse slot at 50 mph several times. Gives you a very bad grind sound. I have to say, I would rather have the Ford 6sp pattern. We have on Powerstroke and I like its reverse by 1st rather then reverse by 6th.

I also like top gear up and out of the way (the way 5sp's are). Sixth gear is a pain for a third rider in front.

The ZFs in the Ferds and Chivys are paterned(sp) nicely. 6th is where 5th is on the 5 and six speeds. Another nice thing about reverse bieng close to first is backing large trailers into tight spaces. Not near as much shifter stroking going on since R and 1st are on the same "line". My work truck is a 7 speed with R and L all the way to the left. Makes it nice when trying to see saw around in places that the truck is to big for ;)

Well, you got to really push it out to the right, and I've done it once. It did grind. I agree the pattern is wrong for the number of gears. Reverse should be on the left side out and away. No one trys to get first in a hurry.

My 3 cents

I got a fifth gear scratch

I have a 5spd and accidentaly hit third one time, when I was passing someone. ;)

I played it off like it was a fifth gear scratch :D

That lock does not work. My work truck is a ford F-550 with a 6-speed. 6th gear in the Ford is where the reverse is on the dodge. If you slam the gear hard enough it goes right in. Now I have a reverse gear sync problem. It grinds going into reverse now at a standstill, to stop this I have to put it into 6th first.

Actualy, sounds like you have a clutch problem. Correct me if I am wrong but reverse is not synchronized on most cars and trucks. The input shaft is still spinning a little and you hear that trying to go into reverse. By putting it into 6th gear it stops the input shaft allowing reverse to go in no prob. The clutch might not be disengaging(sp) all the way.

Yep syncro's on reverse

Bad 340 'Cuda [ I'm jealous!] The new transmissions have syncromesh on the reverse gear as well as first.

I have had both the five and six speed transmissions, and it is nice to be able to get into reverse without being at a complete stop and not grinding.

But if the truck is going 50 mph, and you try for reverse or first the syncros will probably let the gears grind if enough pressure is applied.

As for the six speed pattern, it stinks!! I think Dodge did it just to be different from the others.

Jockeying a trailer around or wiggling into a narrow parking space will give you tendonitis!!

Greg L.

Nope! Never gone into reverse...

Never accidently hit reverse on mine, but I shore did kill my friendss six-speed Ford three times trying to go into first and not go into reverse... I kept hitting third. :D

I wouldn't worry. You gotta push a lot harder to go into reverse than 5th.

I've clipped reverse a couple times, when the truck was new. It just took a short time to get used to. If I had my wishes, I would put reverse just the opposite of where it is. Up, and to the left. You would never catch reverse there accidentally when you're rolling down the road, and it would make it easier to rock the truck, if ever stuck in snow, or mud. (As if that would ever happen. ) Hee hee hee
