Diesel vs Gas price?

Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel is here!

A close friend of mine has been having a nightmare with his 2003 Ford PS. In the first 50,000 miles it was in the shop 48 days! Seems most of the problems are fuel system related. It will have awsome power sometimes and then out of the blue it runs like a old 6. 9, smokey and almost no power. If it is under 60 degrees sometimes it will hardly start, lots of white smoke and it shakes as though it is only running on 4. Next time it starts fine? He lost a rear main seal and after geting it back from the shop it hydrolocked the engine and they tell him at least 3-4 weeks to get it back. He is in the process of trying to enact the lemon law but Ford keeps throwing up road blocks for him. I feel for him, it seems everything that could go wrong with this engine has gon wrong.

Sounds like it might be time to talk to a..... uh, er, lawyer. My dad had a problem with a Ford product years ago and threatened the dealer that he would paint the vehicle with lemons all over it and park it in front of the dealership if they didn't make things right..... they made things right. If you do such a thing, don't paint the dealer's name on it... . the little emblem on the back is enough and the dealer put that there anyways so you won't get in trouble or anything.

This just sounds like any other common 6. 0, what seems to be the real concern here?

Not really a concern of mine. Just a commentary on how unlucky a person can be if he or she happenes to have a work truck that will not perform as advertised. A big difference between commuting daily with your PU and having to rely on it for your buisness. The dealer seems to be of little or no help. I have been very lucky with my work Dodges and my local dealer has been A-1 on any small problems I have had. I hate to see anyone GM Ford or Dodge have these kind of problems.

I have no personal experience with this, but from reading here there is no use fighting the HUGE automaker with YOUR money and lawyer. I would just trade it off for a Cummins, and mark it up as a lesson!!!

I have a friend that is having the same problems, he came to me before he bought his truck, my exact words were: "I have 140K on my cummins, I do regular maintainance, and have NEVER had a serious problem (something that cost over $300 in maintainance and I didnt WANT to do)". He didnt listen, he bought a Ford, and bought some serious problems. His decides every once-in-a-while to just dump all the oil out of the crank-case onto the ground and shut down. Very interesting, I keep telling him not to take the beer cooler out of the bed at night, I am sure that truck is stealing it.

Nope... gotta disagree with ya. Seen too many people get things fixed by being a PITA to the dealer. The dealer loves people that think like you do... just go away and leave me alone is exactly what the dealer wants you to do... . there's just no way I'm going to take it laying down after spending big bucks and ending up with a big POS. And there are lawyers that have first time counseltation that's free.

How many times has the vehicle been in the shop? The amount of times and for the same problem is more important than it is for the number of days but that's important too. Need to make sure the service writer writes it up for the same problem each time if it is in for the same problem. That's very important if he wants to use the lemon law. That's one way that dealers get around the lemon law... . the service writer writes it up for a different problem each time in so it looks like each problem is getting fixed each time out.

I understand your comment and opinion Djb, the reason that I have this opinion is: Lets say that you spend 500 on a lawyer, he writes a letter, and so on, you keep making payments, and loose the use of your truck, for who knows how long, then after that 500 is exhausted, you give him another 500. Basically, in my head when its all said and done, you have spent your money, you have made payments, and you have lost the use of your own truck. And the auto maker has all the time in the world with their lawyers, because they are free, I mean they are goign to be empolyed anyways.

I wish him the very best of luck in fighting the dealer with this one.

I would have a hard time selling a truck that I knew had real problems to an unsuspecting buyer. Bad karma has a way of comming around and biting you in the arse. I would continue to pressure the dealer to fix, and sell after I felt that the problem was fixed. NEVER BUY A FORD should be the lesson. I went down the same road a few years ago with a Ford car. NEVER AGAIN.

Good luck to your friend

My grandpa reminds me of a past Ford "gingle". I guess they used to say "There is a Ford in your future". My grandpa always says: "There is a Ford in my PAST!!!"

I feel for your buddy as well. My buddy bought a used 6. 0 2003 this last spring even though the rest of us drive Cummins. He said that it ran strong with the Edge box but that it ran hot on days above 70*. He lost his job right after he bought it and traded it for a mini van for the family. He is now considering a a 4X4 that needs a motor and repowering it with a Cummins :D
