Hey all, dont usually post on the 12 Valve threads but I was running into Sams today in Denver. While walking in there I saw and heard a rough looking 12 valve idling. I practically began to tear up when I heard the thing idling. It sounded horrible!! It didnt have a miss at idle or anything but it was super quiet and was idling so low it had to be like 400 rpms or something. Seriously, it was so quiet it couldve passed for a gas engine. What couldve been wrong with this thing? It pains me to hear so a sweet engine running so poorly!

Was it a first gen? They're really quiet... .

I have heard a few of the VE pumped 6BT's idling very low - I guess so that the owner can make it sound like a class-8 powerplant.

Matt

Nope it was a second gen 12 valve truck.

It sounded real bad, beside being a low idle is just didnt sound right or healthy. Poor truck had the snot beat out of it. The Bed looked like it had been thru a couple of stampedes. Well, on the bright side, looks like the owner is getting good use out of it!

Jeff

It probably had a LOT of miles on it.

I know of at least one truck that has over 100k on it - HARD miles... . and has only had two oil changes.

Matt

He might have been running BioDiesel in it. That makes the Cummins pretty darn quiet. You can still tell it's a Diesel though...

My 99 VW almost sounded like a gasser when running it on Bio. Did you notice the exhaust? It should have been relatively smoke free, and might even smell like french fries.
