I had to wait to the last minute...

I installed a Westach combo EGT/Boost gauge and the transmission temperature gauge (fuel pressure gauge is in route).

The EGT/Boost works, but the transmission temp gauge doesn't.

With key ignition on, the needle pegs right. Trouble shooting guide says instrument not grounded properly or temperature sender is shorted.

Both gauges share the same ground and power wire (tapped from radio), so if the ground wasn't good, I wouldn't expect the boost gauge to work.

Multimeter confirms continuity between negative wire and frame.

Removing sensor wire drops needle back to left.

Multimeter shows zero resistance across the temperature sender (spec shows 3570 ohms at 70 deg F).

Sound like a shorted sender?

Lessons learned:

1) I should have tested the sensor prior to installation, and

2) I shouldn't try to install the gauges 3 days prior to the roadtrip (now there is no way to get a replacement sensor in time if that is the problem).

Any ideas for a miracle save?

Thanks,

Pat

Try running a jumper ground from battery negative post through driver window to gauge ground just to be sure it is not the ground. Different gauges can have somewhat different tolerance to grounding in cab versus battery post. Good luck!

Your reading 0?

That would be a dead short. Sounds like a bad sender.

Next day air is your only hope. The supplier shouldn't have a problem with that.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that this morning, but no luck either. Looks like the sensor (thanks Big White Beast for input). I guess I need to give Geno's a call.

It turned out to be a bad sensor. The replacement arrived this morning (Geno's overnighted it to me at their cost) in time for me to install it. Yes, I checked it before installing :)

Now to get cleaned up, hit the road and to learn how to read the gauges and modify my driving accordingly.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Regards,

Pat
