On the rear of the main turbo unit is 4 bolts going though a flange to bolt the turbo to the rest of the exhaust.

Well that flange has broke right in half and is only being held on by 2 of the 4 bolts and has quit a bit of an exhaust leak.

My dealer says the flange is part of the turbo and the turbo unit must be replaced.

Is this common? They want $1000 installed. Does that some right for a re-manufactured unit, or about $1400 for a new one installed.

Can anyone shed any light on the subject?

Anyone in the Portland Oregon/Vancouver Wa area have a good used take off or something that I can buy and help install? The truck runs and I can come to you if you can help with installation. I will pay!

TIA

Sounds like Dealer BS to me.

Go over the border to Piers Harry and ask him. He may have one of those flanges kicking around his shop.

Look at his prices for turbo's. They don't even compare pricewise to the ones from DC.

I have a brand new PDR HX35 sitting here in a box ready to go.

and I also have anearly new HY35 too

Are you under 100K miles?

If so, this should be a warranty item covered under the engine warranty. If not, then check the other sources mentioned in the above posts.

This flange you are asking about... does it have 5 bolts in it accessible from the rear and is one piece with the elbow that connects to the exhaust, or are the bolts put in from the middle of the turbo, where the oil fittings are?

I can't figure out if you are talking about the back plate or turbine housing. Either way, the parts are available separately for MUCH LESS than $1000.

Rear flange:

Wow........

Are you talking the silver part? If so thats the actual turbo housing. Never heard of that before. I'd call Piers at the link posted above. He can hook you up with a modified HX-35 and use your exsisting housing for way cheaper than the Dealer quoted you. If your even somewhat capable with tools it should only take you about an hour to R&R it. Once you take a good look at it you'll see what I mean. The only expendable is a gasket on the oil drain side.

brobertson, I have a oem exhaust housing off of my 2001 HO sitting on the bench collecting dust, make me a reasonable offer and its yours. PM me if interested

cheers, Kevin

Partner, buy the PDR from Bob if you have an inkling that more fuel is headed your way, or if you are Tommy Toostock then buy the housing from Kevin. Tell the dealer to take a flying ____ at a rolling donut... ... ... ... ...

The second set you showed. The best I can tell is there were only 4 bolts.

Correct, there would be 4 bolts there, going through two "C" shaped pieces that hold the turbine housing to the cartridge. The turbine housing is easily replaceable. Give me a call if you need any other info.

2 "C" shaaped pieces?

The 2 bolts are gone, and so is one of the "c" shaped pieces. Is maybe that is all that happened, is the bolts backed out and the "C" shaped piece fell off? I thought is just broke in half.

I NEED a book, some pictures, a Mechanic that knows what he is taking about.

If all I need is 2 bolts and one of the "C" pieces I am really going to be disappointed in my Dealer/mechanic.

Wondering and confused Bob

I took my truck to RIP in Portland.

After talking to RIP I felt very comfortable with his knowledge and abilities so I took my truck to him.

To my dealers credit, (the one that said the turbo was bad) the turbo was bad, but there was more damage than just the turbo.

The exhaust manifold is cracked (no surprise there with almost 200K miles), one of the bolts was broken off inside, and one of the clamps were broken.

So I am getting a new Piers hx35 turbo, a new ATS 3 piece exhaust manifold, new clamps and he is installing both the exhaust temp and boost gauges mounted on the A pillar.

I have an exhaust brake (stock jacobs) and I want to stay as close to stock as possible for reliability reasons. I think/fell/hope the hx35 is more reliable than the 40 and it cost less and still uses my stock exhaust brake.
