Before I would get a Mopar Pump, I would get one from Cummins every time!

The pump from Mopar is more then the ones from Cummins. I priced them from Cummins here in SD, and they run between $159 to $195. Someone told me that I could get one from Cummins for $95. That must have been a rebuilt, but per the Cummins dealer they do not make a rebuilt for the ISB Dodge truck model. So I have no idea where they were getting that price from, but it wasn't from Rapid City, SD.

FWIW, the water pump died in my 2004 5. 9L 2500 at 103K miles (2 months outside of warranty). Dealer charged $260 for part, $30 coolant, $30 labor for a total of $320. Problem discovered when coolant was pouring out onto driveway.

Where do you live? I can't believe that a "Dealer" would only charge $30. 00 do anything, let alone change a water pump! Mopar coolant, if that is what they used costs $18+ per gallon and you need almost 3 gals. All I have to say is that dealer was being very, very nice to you!

Dealer was Rio Vista Ford/Dodge, south of Sacramento, CA. They recycled the coolant that was already in the system, so that was the price break there. They've made many errors in the past with some other maintenance and repairs so the labor break was for customer appreciation (I think).

We own several trucks and have been through a lot of them in 15 years... . I've very an*l when it comes to break downs and people selling service that more often than not will screw up the system... . broken pet cocks... . what ever... .

1 - We've never lost a water pump in a Ford or Dodge and we sell the trucks with 500K miles... .

2 - We don't change the coolant unless we loose it from a bad or damaged hose... . we only put back those coolants with out the fine abrasive to clean the system... there is a term for this... . and I can't remember it... .

3 - we only add back distilled water... .

4 - we test and treat the coolant once every year or 2 with a chemical from CAT to fortify the coolant..... It's a PH balance test... . if it passes we let it go...

5 - we ran coolant filters and treatment on some of the Fords, and CATS and found no value over the above. .

WE Watch the level in the over flow tank... . fix leaks and NEVER let anyone add back water or coolant that we don't supply... .

In the past 3 years we've had one bypass hose on a 10L CAT engine rupture on the open road on a SUNDAY and a slow drive to a NAPA store found us a bypass hose on the shelf that with a sharp knife would work... . we ended up with distilled water from the convenience store until the truck got home... . The NAPA store had NO COOLANT with out cleaners... .

Hope this helps.....

Well, mine is meticulously maintained by the dealer and serviced by them every 3500 miles.

I spend way too much having them do things that I can do myself for 1/4 the price for this crap to happen. The pump failed for no other reason than its lifespan is somewhere less than 85,000 miles.

I spoke to the dealer today in Nevada that replaced my Water Pump in June. According to him the fact that my water pump first crapped out at 60K was not unusual. He said that it could be that I got some bad pumps or not flushing the system often enough. The truck has 112K on it and the system has been flushed 3 times during that time. Twice because of the pump failures. He did agree that buying the pump from Cummins would be a cost saver. (Will keep that in mind for the next pump... which sounds like it will be going out again at some point). I have to say that I am very disappointed in Cummins making pumps that don't last any longer than 60-80K

Lost mine at around 100K. 95$ for a cummins part and 30 min to swap it. As an oprganization representing a lot of owners could we get TDR to contact the manufactuer (Cummins) and say whats up? I know that throught he official dealer net this isnt even a blip on the radar. I know in the jeep world when we contact someone as the magazine with a thread related to a problem or failures thats 5 or 6 pages long, the manufacturer will usually do something for our readers. Or least they tell us to go pound sand and that they don't plan on doing anything. Either way we have their answer straight from the source.

YAY!! Someone else that found a $95 pump!!

I'm in Spokane... . the local Shucks stores... Checker, O-Rileys, etc... . have a rebuilt pump for $46. 00 and a new pump for $70. 00... Both are on the shelf today... .

I do business with 4-5 of the Cummins NW stores here in the Pacific Northwest... . I'll ask them if they see a lot of Water Pumps off the 5. 9 or 6. 7's... .

I've shared above that we don't do a lot with the cooling system... its our feeling that keeping it intact is more cost effective than spending money to keep it perfect... . in the same manner we don't open the system that might induce stuff to contaminate it, and I personally believe that the use of non-silicate anti-freeze and distilled water is also a plus... .

Just some more thoughts. .
