Can you get an HX-35 in a ball bearing configuration?? What is the reliability compared to a stock HX-35??

I'm looking at this in a preventative maintenance type of way. I have 111,000 turns now and am thinking about getting my replacement turbo now so I can just do the swap out and then rebuild the original and put it on the shelf for the future.

I really don't know of any advantage of moving to a larger turbo as I am happy with the HX-35. I guess if someone could show me an mpg gain, I would consider that.

Just looking for information here.

Thanks for takin time to read this. :)

Dunno, but as I unnerstand it, the main thing BB's are for is enhanced spooling. I'm thinking the OEM 35 should be good for a couple hundred thousand even with enhanced fueling--provided you don't coke it up with hot shut-downs.

I hear that making room for bearings is the problem and another reason it's usually done on larger chargers.

I think it would be cost prohibitive for 35 performance levels.

That being said, I'm really happy with my HX35/40 from City Diesel. It's properly balanced and MOVES some air. I expect that it would outlive a stock 35 just from the balancing. I do expect a mileage gain with this charger--when I get through roasting tires and wintertime idling. :D

Garrett GT45 is a Bearing version that is close-ish to a 35 series Holset. However with dangers of barking and our constant changing of fueling levels our trucks would eat em alive I think.

And there IS a 50/55 ball-bearing, yadda yadda, charger being tested here locally. Kinda pricey though. We'll see how it fares when the sled comes out. ;)

Ahhhh, I understand. The smaller turbos would require special machining that would drive the cost up. OK that makes sense and the normal responsible individual would not want to spend big bucks.

Cooking the oil is the reason I run a full synthetic and allow my temp to fall below 300 on shutdowns.

Now exactly what is a HX35/40 and what does it do that an HX-35 does not. More low end umph or mid range. This sounds interesting.

Thanks for the replies :) this is what I like about this forum.

A GT45 is WAY BIGGER than a HX35. It flows closer to a HT3B

Garrett is selling a BB turbo for the PSD. I'm thinking since it's a bigger displacement engine their turbo may work on our Cummins, but I don't know a thing about maps, drive pressures, or boost pressure.

Click on the City Diesel banner next time it pops up. Most of the details are there. I'll PM you some more.

But while we're here. Tonight I could pull 36# boost on DD3 injectors alone. I was only making 30 with stock turbo without the box.

I was overfueled for stock turbo and may still be for this one. At full RPM I wasn't burning all my fuel on levels 4 and 5. Now I am- I think, dyno numbers coming soon.
